Located in an old building on Popa Șapcă Street, the museum is a real treasure trove: its collections boast more than 114,000 exhibits. Here you can see everything—from fragile botanical specimens and rare minerals to impressive paleontological finds dating back millions of years. Founded in 1923, the department has grown from a small scientific circle into one of the country's most modern interactive museums.

The Oltenia Museum is particularly valuable for its ability to combine classic dioramas with innovative technologies. Visitors don't just look at display cases; they take an interactive journey through time and space, exploring both the earth's depths and distant galaxies. It is an ideal stop for a family holiday and for those who want to see a "different" Romania—scientific and educational.

What to Do

Your exploration will begin on the first floor with the breathtaking "Oltenia-Terra fossilis" exhibition. Here, the distant past comes to life: you can see unique fossils found in this region. The "stars" of the collection are the remains of the Stoina mastodon, the giant mammoth skeleton from Leu, and the skulls of cave bears that once ruled these lands.

Heading up to the second floor, you'll enter the world of living nature. This exhibition is dedicated to the diverse ecosystems of Oltenia. Masterfully crafted dioramas allow you to see the local inhabitants of forests, rivers, and mountains in their natural habitat in great detail. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the biodiversity of southern Romania through realistic installations.

The most futuristic part of the museum awaits you on the third floor. The 250-square-meter interactive zone "The Universe and Our Solar System" will transport you beyond Earth. Thanks to 3D and 2D technologies, multimedia panels, and Flash presentations, you can study the structure of galaxies, constellations, and learn the secrets of star birth. The interactive format makes studying astronomy equally fascinating for both children and adults.

History & Facts

The history of this scientific center began on December 2, 1923. It was then that the Museum of Natural History was founded in Craiova through the efforts of members of a local Science Circle, led by the passionate professor Marin Demetrescu. Just five years later, in 1928, the institution gained more significant status and was renamed the Oltenia Regional Museum.

Over the decades of its existence, the collection has changed addresses several times—from the halls of the prefecture to various administrative buildings. The section found its permanent home in the historic building at 8 Popa Șapcă Street in 1986. Since then, the exhibition has been constantly updated, transforming from a classic collection into a modern educational center.

A major milestone in the museum's life was 2008, when a large-scale reconstruction was carried out thanks to a European grant (PHARE project). This allowed not only for the renovation of the interiors but also for the implementation of modern multimedia technologies, making the museum one of the most visited tourist attractions in Dolj County. Today, it houses an impressive collection of more than 114,000 exhibits.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all three themed floors and delve into the details of the interactive stands, visitors are recommended to allow 2 to 3 hours for their visit. This will be enough time to study the paleontological finds in detail and let the children play to their heart's content with the multimedia installations in the space zone.

If you are a passionate natural science enthusiast or plan to carefully read the description of every exhibit in the collection, half a day will fly by unnoticed. The museum is designed to be equally interesting for a quick overview and for a deep dive into the natural history of the region.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes visitors throughout the week, except for Mondays. The doors of the Natural Sciences Section are open from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. This is a convenient time for both morning tours and afternoon visits.
