In the heart of the historical center of Sibiu is one of the city's most impressive buildings — the History Museum in the Altemberger House. This grand ensemble is considered one of the most significant monuments of Gothic civil architecture not only in Romania, but in all of Southeastern Europe.

The complex consists of ten architectural units and a defensive tower, forming a unique historical landscape. Originally, the building served as the residence of the chief administrator Altemberger, and later, for four hundred years, it was used as the city hall. Today, it is the most important branch of the Brukenthal National Museum, introducing guests to the lives, customs, and beliefs of the people who inhabited the Transylvania region over the centuries.
The main building of the museum is an ancient residential tower, the construction of which began as far back as the late 13th century. Visiting this place allows tourists not only to see rare artifacts but literally touch walls that have seen the changing of eras and rulers, making the Altemberger House a must-see on any traveler's itinerary.
