The journey in a cozy yellow cabin lasts about 5 minutes, during which you cover a path 175 meters long. The cable car helps to easily handle the 40-meter elevation change characteristic of the steep coast in this part of Russia. A total of 20 cabins operate on the line, each designed for two people, creating an atmosphere of privacy and romance.

For many guests of the city, a ride on the cable car has become a mandatory ritual. The windows offer magnificent panoramic views of the sea and the resort nestled in greenery. Thanks to its accessibility and reliability, the cable car is rightfully considered one of the most popular attractions in the Kaliningrad region, combining features of urban transport and an exciting ride.

What to Do

The main pleasure here is, of course, the ride itself. As you ascend or descend in a bright cabin, you can see the sandy beaches and the renovated promenade from a unique perspective. This is the perfect moment to pull out your camera: the views of the Baltic Sea from the heights of the Svetlogorsk hills are truly breathtaking, especially in sunny weather.

A ride on the cable car fits conveniently into a walking route around the city. After descending, you will immediately find yourself at the water's edge, where you can walk along the shore or sit in a seaside cafe. If you are traveling with children, they will certainly appreciate the little aerial adventure in the yellow cabins, which move smoothly and are not at all frightening in terms of height.

During the warm season, you can enjoy the cable car ride repeatedly, using it as a fast elevator between the beach and the railway station. In winter, during calm periods between storms, the lift sometimes opens for visitors on weekends, giving a rare opportunity to admire the rugged beauty of the winter Baltic from a bird's-eye view.

Getting There

Getting to this iconic spot is easy. The cable car is located in the immediate vicinity of the "Svetlogorsk-2" railway station. If you arrive in Svetlogorsk by electric train from Kaliningrad, the journey takes about an hour, and it's just a 2–3 minute walk from the platform to the upper station.

For those who prefer buses or shuttle taxis, look for the "Vokzal Svetlogorsk-2" or "Plyazh" stops. If you are staying in another part of the city, for example, near the "Svetlogorsk-1" station, a pleasant walk along Lenina Street or the promenade will take about 15–20 minutes. You can also always use a local taxi to quickly reach the entrance from the waterfront side.

Travelers arriving by car can leave their vehicle in the parking lot near the station or in the adjacent side streets. The navigator will accurately lead you to Letnyaya Street, 3, where the lower pavilion is located. During the peak tourist season, it is recommended to arrive early to easily find a parking spot.

History & Facts

The history of lifts in this location dates back to the early 20th century. As early as 1908, the first rail funicular was built in German Rauschen (the former name of the city). It was 90 meters long, and the cabins were powered by an electric motor. This mechanism served faithfully during the Soviet era, carrying vacationers for a symbolic 15 kopeks until it was dismantled in the mid-1960s.

In the 1970s, it was decided to build a modern cable car to replace the old funicular. The official opening took place in June 1983 and was timed to the traditional Song Festival that opened the resort season. The project became an important part of the city's infrastructure, significantly simplifying access to the sea for both tourists and locals.

The cable car acquired its modern look after a major reconstruction that began in 2010. During the work, the technical parts were completely replaced and the fleet of cabins was updated. The grand opening of the renovated attraction took place on June 6, 2014. Today, it is not just transport, but a carefully preserved symbol of the resort, combining historical heritage with modern comfort.

Time Needed

To simply ride the cable car one way, you will only need about 5 minutes. However, considering the time to buy a ticket, wait for boarding, and the mandatory photo session against the backdrop of sea landscapes, you should set aside about 20–30 minutes for this visit.

If you plan to combine the ride with a walk along the promenade, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the upper part of the city, the visit can last 1–2 hours. This is the optimal time to enjoy the views without rushing, take beautiful photos, and feel the leisurely rhythm of resort life.

Working Hours

The cable car is open to visitors daily, allowing guests to plan their leisure time without being tied to a specific day of the week. According to the current schedule, the lift operates from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Sunday.

It is worth considering that the operation of the cable car may depend on weather conditions. In case of strong gusty winds or a storm warning, the operation of the cabins may be temporarily suspended for safety reasons. During the winter period, the schedule is often reduced, and the lift may operate primarily on holidays and weekends.
