This is the only division of the famous museum in Russia that is located literally on the seashore. Since its opening in late 2015, the center has become a hub for those wishing to discover the cultures of distant lands and see the incredible treasures of the Baltic. The center features a barrier-free environment, making the exhibitions accessible to all categories of travelers, including parents with strollers.

The center houses not only large-scale exhibition halls but also a collection storage facility, a conference hall, and an art gallery. The special atmosphere of the place allows visitors to transport themselves from a cozy resort town into a world of exotic islands and deep-sea mysteries, making the Maritime Exhibition Center a must-see on any Kaliningrad Region itinerary.

What to Do

The main draw for guests is the ethnographic exhibition "People of the Sea." Here, you can take a journey to Southeast Asia while viewing authentic household items, cult artifacts, and incredible works of art by master craftsmen from Bali, Java, and other islands. A particular favorite for both children and adults is the Miklouho-Maclay hut, where you can take original photos and learn about the life of the great explorer.

Art lovers should definitely visit the "Amber Living Room." This part of the museum showcases unique masterpieces made from the "sun stone": from delicate sculptures and sea lanterns to large-scale artistic panels like the "Compass Rose." Additionally, it features an impressive collection of seashells, striking in their variety of shapes and colors.

Beyond observing the exhibits, visitors can actively engage with the world through several activities:

  • Watch captivating films about deep-sea life in specially equipped viewing zones.
  • Observe live fish and even participate in their feeding process.
  • Visit the Maritime Art Gallery, which hosts regularly updated exhibitions of marine art.
  • Relax in a cozy cafe, pick out unique souvenirs, or spend some quiet time in the local library.

Getting There

The Maritime Exhibition Center is located in the heart of the resort's activity at 11 Lenina Street. Since the building is situated within the "Yantar-hall" Variety Theater complex, it is easy to find by following the signs for this major cultural landmark.

If you are traveling from Kaliningrad, the most convenient way is to take the "Lastochka" express train or a regular bus to the "Svetlogorsk-2" station. From the station, the museum is just a leisurely 10–15 minute walk away, allowing you to enjoy the architecture of the old town. For those traveling by car, it is easiest to follow the coordinates: 54.9455251, 20.1597562. There are parking areas provided near the complex.

Taxis also operate actively within the city and can take you to the center's doors from any point in Svetlogorsk in just a few minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this unique site is closely linked to the development of the Museum of the World Ocean, which was founded in the spring of 1990 as Russia's first comprehensive maritime museum-reserve. Establishing an exhibition branch specifically in Svetlogorsk allowed the museum to bring part of its rich collection directly to the Baltic coast.

The official opening of the Maritime Exhibition Center took place on December 25, 2015. Interestingly, the "Amber Living Room" exhibition was originally located on board the legendary vessel "Vityaz" in Kaliningrad. However, with the acquisition of new space in "Yantar-hall," it found a permanent home in the resort town, significantly expanding and transforming in the process.

The amber collection itself began to take shape back in 1993, when museum staff conducted experimental underwater mining. Many of the specimens found then, featuring unique inclusions of ancient flora and fauna, are today the pride of the museum's collection.

Time Needed

To thoughtfully explore all sections of the ethnographic collection and examine the details in the "Amber Living Room," visitors usually need 2 to 3 hours. This is plenty of time to not only study the exhibits but also watch thematic videos about the ocean.

If you plan to visit the center with children and take part in interactive activities or browse the art gallery, you should set aside a bit more time—about half a day. The presence of a lounge area, a cafe, and a library allows you to spend time here comfortably without feeling overwhelmed by the wealth of information.

Working Hours

When planning your visit, please note that the center is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are days off at the museum.

It is important to remember that the last Wednesday of each month is a maintenance day, and the museum doors may be closed to the public.
