What to Do

In the museum's halls, visitors will find a fascinating journey through twelve centuries of history. Here you can trace the development of ceramic art from modest medieval wares to exquisite modern masterpieces. The exhibition covers a vast geography: from workshops in Europe (Switzerland, France, Germany, Russia) to exotic producers in the Middle and Far East.

Special attention should be paid to the collection of ancient Chinese porcelain. You can see the very items that the first travelers, such as Marco Polo, once brought to Europe. It is amazing to observe how Eastern craftsmanship inspired European monarchs to create their own "porcelain palaces" and develop the famous manufactories in Meissen and Sèvres.

In addition to exploring the display cases, be sure to take time for the museum's architecture itself: its domes, columns, and light-filled galleries. After touring the collections, it is pleasant to stroll through Ariana Park, where among lush magnolias and ancient alleys, you can find interesting historical monuments and enjoy the peace away from the city bustle.

Getting There

The Musée Ariana is located at Av. de la Paix 10, in the heart of the international organizations district. It is easily recognizable thanks to its proximity to the majestic Palace of Nations and the surrounding park of the same name.

The most convenient way to reach the museum is by public transport. Geneva's buses and trams run regularly to this area; the nearest stops are just a few minutes' walk from the entrance. Thanks to the city's well-developed transport network, the trip from the center will not take long.

If you prefer more comfort, you can use taxi services or car-sharing apps. The ride from the central railway station or the historic city center is short and will quickly bring you to the gates of this architectural masterpiece.

History & Facts

The history of this amazing place began in 1877, when the philanthropist and collector Gustave Revilliod decided to build a home for his extensive collections. The museum was built over seven years and opened its doors in 1884. Revilliod, the last representative of a noble Genevan family, named it after his mother — Ariane Revilliod.

Gustave Revilliod was a passionate traveler and dedicated his life to searching for rare art objects. His goal was not just collecting, but educating his compatriots: he sincerely believed that contemplating beauty helps to shape good taste among the general public. After his death in 1890, the museum and all its treasures became the property of Geneva.

During the 20th century, the museum's status changed: for a long time, it was a branch of the Museum of Art and History. After a massive twelve-year restoration completed in 1993, the building was restored to its original splendor. Since 2010, the Musée Ariana has officially been an independent cultural institution, upholding the traditions of its founder.
