History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the distant past: the first mention of the Penthes estate is from 1358. At that time, it belonged to Guillaume de Vizancier and was a fortified house. The territory received its current name in the 17th century when it became part of the feudal holdings of Antoine de Charrière, Lord of Pentaz.

In the 18th century, the estate's appearance changed significantly. In 1761, the property was purchased by Alexandre Sales de Genève, who transformed the old building into an elegant country residence. Later, in 1972, the estate became the property of the Canton of Geneva, marking a new chapter in its development as a public space.

Since 1978, the Foundation for the History of the Swiss Abroad has operated in the castle building, opening a museum and research center here. A significant event occurred in 1983 when the city officially turned the area into a public park. Today, Penthes Castle is recognized as a site of national cultural significance, and the Jardin de Penthes restaurant, located in its pavilion, harmoniously continues the land's traditions of hospitality.
