History & Facts

The history of this location began back in 1873, when a modest Café Mühlemann opened on the lakeshore. A significant boost to its development came with the construction of the Bödelibahn railway and the ship pier in 1874. However, a few years later, the café faced financial difficulties, and in 1881, it was purchased by Anna Seiler, who gave the establishment a new name — Café de la Gare.

Over time, the business grew: Anna's daughter added guest rooms, transforming the café first into a pension and then into the full-fledged Seiler au Lac hotel. In 1906, a cozy wooden chalet was added nearby, which was used as a summer house. After World War II, the building changed hands several times until it was acquired in 1955 by the Dinkels, who found a sale advertisement in a newspaper.

The new owners carried out an extensive renovation, essentially giving the building a second life: they installed modern heating, equipped bathrooms, and renovated the restaurant hall. In the following decades, the hotel continued to evolve while maintaining family traditions. In the 1980s and 90s, luxury suites were created, including the famous "Honeymoon" suite, and the kitchen was fully modernized to meet the highest standards of service.

Time Needed

To simply enjoy the atmosphere and have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, guests usually need 1 to 2 hours. If you plan to have a full dinner on the lakeside terrace overlooking the sunset, it is worth setting aside about 3 hours to take your time and fully appreciate the local cuisine.

Many tourists prefer to stay here for a longer period. For those who want not only to visit the restaurant but also to explore the surroundings of Bönigen, it is recommended to book a room for at least one night. This allows you to greet the morning on the lakeshore without haste and take full advantage of all the four-star service amenities.
