What to Do

The main activity in the park is leisurely observing animals in an environment almost indistinguishable from the wild. Strolling along the well-kept paths, you will encounter red and sika deer, graceful mouflons, and playful raccoons. Children are especially delighted by the sociable pygmy goats and rare Alpine sheep.

For those wanting to learn more about the regional fauna, information boards are installed near each enclosure, turning a walk into an engaging biology lesson. If you get hungry, the park provides special picnic areas where you can have a snack while enjoying the sounds of the stream and the forest.

Photographers will appreciate the changing scenery depending on the season: from bright spring blooms to snow-covered rocks in winter. Remember that you can only feed the animals with special food sold on-site to avoid harming their health.

Getting There

Reaching this natural retreat from the city of Olten is quite simple. If you prefer walking, the route from the main railway station takes about 20 minutes and offers a chance to enjoy the local scenery.

For those choosing public transport, bus line 503 (direction Meierhof) is ideal; get off at the Höhenstrasse Ost stop. From the stop, it is just a 3-minute walk to the zoo entrance.

Drivers should note that Wildparkstrasse is closed to private vehicles. It is best to leave your car in the "blue zone" parking area near the Höhenstrasse Ost stop, where a short hiking trail to the park begins.

History & Facts

The history of Wildpark Mühletäli began on May 16, 1951. An initiative group of residents, inspired by parks in Aarau and Zofingen, decided to create a similar recreation spot in their region. To realize the idea, they chose an unusual location—the site of an abandoned stone quarry and the deep Schluchtäli gorge, which was unsuitable for agriculture.

Developing the territory required considerable effort: a Blockhaus was built on the quarry site, which eventually became a cozy stable for deer, and the old Schluchhaus became a workshop. By the late 1950s, the zoo had taken its modern shape. One of the important technical tasks was bringing in water from the old Kohliweid reservoir for the animals' needs.

For many years, the park has been maintained by volunteers and enthusiasts. Strengthening the slopes with old railway sleepers to protect against erosion and constantly updating the enclosures—especially for the raccoons—has helped preserve this place in its original form for future generations of tourists and locals.

Time Needed

A standard visit to meet the inhabitants of Wildpark Mühletäli usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to leisurely walk around all the enclosures, study the information stands, and enjoy the peace of the forest trails.

If you plan to have a family picnic or are a photography enthusiast waiting for the perfect shot, it's better to set aside about 3 hours for your visit. The free access and compactness of the park allow guests to set their own pace.

Working Hours

Wildpark Mühletäli follows a concept of maximum openness: it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can visit on any holiday or weekend, regardless of the season.

Nevertheless, before your trip, it is recommended to check the park's official website to ensure there are no temporary restrictions due to maintenance work or specific weather conditions.
