Izmir Historical Elevator

About

The Historical Elevator "Asansör" is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks of Izmir, located in the vibrant historical quarter of Karataş. The name "Asansör" comes from the French word for "elevator." It is not just a lift, but a true symbol of the city, harmoniously combining engineering heritage and practical benefit for the residents and guests of Turkey.

The 58-meter-high tower was built in 1907 at the initiative of a local benefactor to ease the path for residents between two streets separated by a steep slope. Before the elevator appeared, they had to climb a long staircase of 155 steps. Today, "Asansör" continues to perform its original function faithfully, being both a functioning piece of urban transport and a living historical monument from the early 20th century.

What to Do

Visiting the Historical Elevator "Asansör" offers several exciting activities. The main one is, of course, the ascent to the top of the tower, where the famous observation deck is located. From here, breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf of Izmir and the urban districts of Izmir open up. This is an ideal place to take unforgettable photos, especially at sunset when the city is bathed in warm tones.

At the top, a cozy cafe and restaurant await visitors, where you can relax with a cup of Turkish coffee or a full dinner while enjoying the magnificent view. This terrace is rightfully considered one of the most romantic spots in the city, attracting both tourists and locals. Thus, "Asansör" is not just transport, but a complete recreation area where you can spend your time pleasantly.

In addition to the views from above, the brick elevator tower itself, built in the early 20th century, is of significant architectural interest and is one of the city's symbols. A walk along Dario Moreno Street leading to the elevator is also part of the experience—here you can see historical buildings and feel the atmosphere of old Izmir. Examining the tower from below and riding in one of its cabins allows you to touch history and appreciate the engineering of the past.

Getting There

The Historical Elevator "Asansör" is located in the central Konak district, in the picturesque Karataş neighborhood. Thanks to its convenient location, reaching this landmark is quite simple. If you are nearby, for example, in the Konak Square or Kemeraltı Market area, you can take a pleasant walk that will take about 15–20 minutes. The route to the elevator passes through the famous Dario Moreno Street, known for its old houses and cozy atmosphere, making the journey itself part of the tour.

The most convenient way to reach "Asansör" by public transport is the tram. Line T2 (Konak Tramway) has a stop called "Karataş," which is located just a few steps from the elevator entrance. You can also use the metro, traveling to "Konak" or "Üçyol" stations. From there, you can reach the elevator on foot in 10-15 minutes or transfer to the tram. Additionally, numerous city buses serve this area.

For those who value comfort and time, a taxi is an excellent option. A trip from central districts of Izmir, such as Alsancak or Konak, will be quick and inexpensive. History & Facts

The history of "Asansör" is inextricably linked to the development of the Karataş district during the Ottoman Empire. There was once a quarry here, and after its closure, the coastal part and the hilltop began to be actively developed, with wealthy Jewish families primarily settling on the shore. To connect the two streets separated by a steep slope, a very long staircase of 155 steps was built, which presented a serious obstacle for daily movement.

The appearance of the elevator is owed to an incident that became a local legend. It is said that one day the elderly head of the Devidas family, who lived on the upper street, fell on these very stairs and broke his leg. This incident deeply moved his neighbor from the lower street, the wealthy Jewish banker and philanthropist Nesim Levi (Bayraklıoğlu). Wishing to make life easier for the residents of the area, he decided to personally fund the construction of a modern lift, having seen similar structures in European cities.

The project was entrusted to French and Italian engineers, and the construction of the elegant brick tower was completed in 1907. This structure became not only a solution to a transport problem but also a true ornament of the district. Initially, the income from the elevator's operation went to the needs of the Karataş Jewish Hospital. In 1942, after the death of the founder, "Asansör" was donated to the Izmir municipality. Thanks to this, it still serves all residents and guests of the city free of charge today, remaining a living monument to generosity and care for people.

Time Needed

A visit to the Historical Elevator "Asansör" can easily be fitted into any schedule, even the tightest city tour. For a quick visit, including a ride on the elevator and a few photos of the panoramic views from the observation deck, 30-40 minutes will be quite sufficient. The ascent and descent themselves take only a few moments, so most of the time will be spent enjoying the views of the Gulf of Izmir and the roofs of the old city.

If you want to get a more complete impression and slowly soak in the atmosphere of the place, it is worth planning for about 1–2 hours. This will be enough time to not only take beautiful photos but also relax over a cup of coffee in the famous cafe-restaurant on the upper terrace. Many tourists and locals come here specifically for slow relaxation, especially at sunset when the city is painted in warm tones. If your plans include a full dinner, the visit may last longer.

Working Hours

The Historical Elevator "Asansör" is open to visitors year-round and is one of those Izmir attractions where access is organized as conveniently as possible. The elevator operates daily, usually from 8:00 AM to midnight. Such a long schedule allows city guests to enjoy panoramic views both in daylight and in the evening when the city lights up.

No advance booking or ticket purchase is required to ride the elevator—the ride is free. This makes "Asansör" accessible to everyone at any time during its working hours. However, it is worth noting that there is a popular restaurant at the top of the tower, and if you plan to have dinner there, especially on a weekend or holiday, it is recommended to book a table in advance. Despite the established working hours, it is always useful to check for current information on-site, as changes may be made to the schedule.
