History & Facts

The history of the building that houses Bishop's Gate Hotel began over two centuries ago when two private houses stood on the site. It acquired its current Edwardian architectural style in 1902, thanks to architect Alfred Forman. The building then became the home of the Northern Counties Club — a prestigious private club for officers, judges, and the local elite.

These walls have hosted truly great guests: the club was visited by future Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the famous poet W.B. Yeats. During the World Wars, the building served as a place of rest for Canadian and American soldiers stationed in the region. Interestingly, women only gained access to this "men's kingdom" in the 1930s, following active picketing by suffragettes.

After the club closed in 2006, the mansion stood vacant for a long time and was even listed on the register of buildings at risk. However, thanks to a large-scale restoration by the Inner City Buildings Preservation Trust, the building was saved. Craftsmen carefully restored the facade and original interiors, and in 2016, the property opened its doors as a luxury boutique hotel, becoming a symbol of the historic center's revival.
