About

If you're looking for the perfect family vacation spot in Santa Barbara, "Kids World" is the one destination you shouldn't miss. This amazing wooden playground, located in the heart of the picturesque Alameda Park in the USA, is a real open-air play town sprawling over more than 700 square meters.

The centerpiece of the complex is a majestic wooden castle with tall towers, rope ladders, and suspension bridges made of tires. The space is designed so that children aged 2 to 12 can feel like fairy-tale heroes while exploring winding paths and secret corners. A special touch of warmth is provided by tiles featuring the handprints of local children who helped create the playground in 1993.

In 2018, Kids World underwent a major renovation, becoming even safer and more modern. It now features impressive play structures shaped like a whale and a shark, along with a separate fenced area for the youngest visitors. Surrounded by the lush greenery of Alameda Park, the playground blends harmoniously into the coastal landscape of California.

What to Do

At Kids World, young adventurers enjoy complete freedom of action. Children can conquer tall wooden towers, test their agility on rope ladders, and enjoy high-speed descents down the slides. For those who love tactile games, there are small finger mazes and special panels with beads that are great for developing fine motor skills.

The "Whale" and "Shark" zones are particularly popular, where kids can climb and play themed games. For those who prefer quiet creativity, craftsman Joseph Garred created a unique sound wall with chimes and an intricate marble maze. These elements turn an ordinary walk into an educational and aesthetic experience.

Meanwhile, parents can relax comfortably in the shaded seating areas while watching their children play. The park is equipped with special picnic areas—"The Castle" and "Whale"—each of which can be reserved for children's birthdays or outdoor family celebrations.

Getting There

Getting to Kids World is easy, as it is conveniently located at 1400 Santa Barbara St in the heart of the city. If you are downtown, the walk takes about 10–15 minutes: head east on State Street to the intersection with Ortega Street, then turn north and continue to Santa Barbara Street.

For those who prefer to drive, parking spaces are available around Alameda Park. GPS coordinates: 34.4288111, -119.7051028. You can also use a taxi or a ride-sharing app directly from the city center.

If you plan to travel by public transport, use the Santa Barbara MTD bus system. Routes 15 and 21X stop in the immediate vicinity of the park. A visit to the playground can easily be combined with a stroll through the neighboring Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, located just across the street.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1993 and has become a true symbol of community unity. The playground's design was developed by the renowned firm Leathers & Associates, but the most amazing thing is that it was built by more than 4,500 volunteers from among the residents of Santa Barbara. This was a massive collective effort that transformed an ordinary plot of land into a unique architectural site.

Local craftsman Joseph Garred gave the playground its special artistic value. As the first volunteer on the construction site, he hand-crafted many decorative details, from carved tower spires to complex sound walls with chimes. In 2017, the craftsman returned to the site with his granddaughter to help restore his creations, highlighting the continuity between generations.

Between 2017 and 2018, the city carried out a major reconstruction of Kids World. Worn wooden structures were replaced, fences were updated, and modern safety standards were implemented. Thanks to these efforts, the playground has maintained its historic appearance while becoming accessible and safe for today's children.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Kids World, aim for 1 to 2 hours for a full experience. This is plenty of time for children to explore all levels of the wooden castle, enjoy the swings, and have a small family picnic in the shade of the trees.

If you are short on time or just passing through while walking in downtown Santa Barbara, 45–60 minutes will be enough. The playground is very compact but packed with play elements, so even in a short time, children will have a memorable experience.

Working Hours

Kids World welcomes visitors daily. The playground is open from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM Monday through Sunday. As it is a public space within a city park, access is free year-round.

However, it is recommended to check the official Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation website before your visit, as operating hours may change slightly depending on the season or scheduled maintenance work.

Its central location makes Kids World an excellent starting point for further exploring the region's culture and nature. A walk through the surrounding area will allow you to see both historical monuments and picturesque botanical gardens.
