Weather Overview

The city of Hue in Vietnam is characterized by a tropical monsoon climate, which means warm weather throughout the year. Average monthly temperatures here fluctuate slightly: from approximately 21-23°C in the cooler months (December-February) to a hot 29-30°C during the sweltering period (May-August). Thanks to this, Hue remains attractive to visit all year round, although weather conditions can vary significantly across different seasons.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguished in the climate of Hue. The relatively dry and hot season lasts roughly from February to August. During this period, especially from February to April, rainfall is minimal (3-4 mm per month), making these the driest months. However, even in the "dry" season, particularly from May to August, the number of days with precipitation can be quite high (19-21 days), indicating a likelihood of short-term rains. Air temperature reaches its maximum values during this time. From September to January, Hue experiences a distinct wet season. It is characterized by frequent, and in peak months, more abundant rains, while the air temperature becomes slightly lower than in the summer months. It is important to note that January, which concludes this season, although having many rainy days (about 21), is distinguished by a comparatively small amount of rainfall (about 6 mm) compared to the autumn peak.

The greatest amount of precipitation falls from September to December, with October and November standing out as the rainiest months: up to 20 mm of precipitation can fall in October with 27 rainy days, and about 16 mm in November with 24 rainy days. Travelers planning a visit to Hue during this period, especially in autumn, should be prepared for high humidity and frequent, sometimes heavy downpours. The air temperature during the wet season (September-January) ranges from average values of around 28°C in September, gradually decreasing to approximately 21°C in January, remaining generally comfortable.

Temperature

The climate in Hue is characterized by distinct seasonal temperature changes, offering diverse conditions for visitors throughout the year. The coolest month is usually January, with an average temperature of about 21.2°C, when night-time lows can drop to 19.0°C, and daytime highs reach 23.5°C. In contrast, the peak heat occurs in June, when the average temperature rises to 30.1°C, and daytime highs often exceed 33°C, reaching 33.5°C.

The summer period in Hue, covering the months from May to August, is distinguished by hot and rather humid weather. Average daytime temperatures at this time steadily hold in the range of 32-33°C, while nights remain warm, with temperatures around 26-27°C. Winter, from December to February, brings significantly milder and more pleasant conditions to Hue. Average monthly temperatures fluctuate around 21-22°C, creating a comfortable coolness, especially compared to the summer heat. Daytime temperatures in winter are usually 23-25°C, and night-time temperatures drop to 19-20°C. Diurnal temperature variations are most noticeable from April to August, when the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can be 6-7°C, whereas in the winter months (from December to February), this difference is smaller, ranging from 3.3°C to 5.5°C.

Precipitation

The city of Hue, located in Vietnam, is characterized by a humid climate, and precipitation can be observed here throughout the year. However, its intensity and frequency change noticeably depending on the season, which is important to consider when planning a trip.

The relatively dry period in Hue usually falls on the months from February to April. At this time, the total amount of precipitation is minimal: February and March are the driest months, when only about 3 mm of precipitation falls. In April, this figure is slightly higher – about 4 mm. Despite the lower amount of rainfall, there are still 12 to 13 rainy days per month, which suggests possible short-term or light rains.

The distinct rainy season in Hue usually lasts from September to December. The peak of precipitation occurs in October, which is the wettest month of the year with an average figure of 20 mm and approximately 27 rainy days. September (11 mm), November (16 mm), and December (12 mm) are also distinguished by a significant amount of precipitation and a large number of rainy days – from 24 to 25 days per month. In these months, rains can be more intense and prolonged.

In the remaining months of the year, such as January (6 mm of precipitation, 21 rainy days), as well as the period from May to August (5-7 mm of precipitation, 19-21 rainy days), the amount of rainfall can be considered moderate. However, the number of rainy days remains high, which means that even outside the peak rainy season, the probability of encountering precipitation in Hue remains significant. Therefore, a light rain jacket or umbrella may come in handy at any time of the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Hue, it is important to consider the local climate, which features warm weather year-round and a distinct rainy season. Regardless of the time of year, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Don't forget comfortable shoes for long walks around historical sites, high SPF sunscreen, a hat for sun protection, and sunglasses. Since it often rains in Hue, especially from May to December when precipitation increases significantly (peaking in September-November), a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will become your indispensable companions.

In the hottest months, from April to August, when the average temperature rises to 29-30°C, give preference to maximally open and loose clothing. During this period, the likelihood of rain is also high, so waterproof shoes or quick-drying sandals may prove very useful. In the cooler months, from December to February, the average temperature holds around 21-22°C, and the minimum can drop to 19-20°C. For this time, it is worth bringing a light jacket, cardigan, or fleece sweater, especially for evening walks or early morning excursions. The principle of layering in clothing will allow you to easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day.

Considering that even in the dry months (for example, February-March with minimal rainfall) there is still a chance of rain, it wouldn't be amiss to carry a small backpack with a waterproof cover to protect electronics and documents. Insect repellent may also be useful, especially if you plan to visit parks or areas near water. Overall, preparing for a trip to Hue requires attention to protection from the sun and moisture, as well as choosing comfortable clothing for warm weather.
