General Weather Overview

The climate in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is characterised as tropical monsoon. The city features warm weather throughout the year; however, rainfall amounts and humidity levels vary significantly depending on the season. Average annual temperatures remain high, making Dhaka an attractive destination for those who love the heat.

Three main seasons can be distinguished in Dhaka. From November to February, the relatively cool and dry winter season prevails. During this time, average temperatures range from 18.4°C in January to 21.3°C in February, and precipitation is practically non-existent (0-1 mm, 1-3 rainy days per month). Then, from March to May, the hot and more humid pre-monsoon period arrives. Air temperature rises noticeably, reaching an average of 28.7°C in April (with highs up to 33.7°C), and the number of rainy days increases, for example, to 13 in April and 23 in May.

The main rainy season, or monsoon, covers the period from June to September. During these months, very humid and hot weather dominates in Dhaka with average temperatures around 29°C. According to the provided data, the highest amount of rainfall occurs in June (about 11 mm), while August stands out with the maximum number of rainy days (up to 28 days). This period is characterised by high humidity and frequent rainfall. October serves as a transitional month: the monsoon gradually retreats, the number of rainy days decreases (about 16), and the weather becomes noticeably drier and more comfortable before the onset of winter.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Dhaka is characterised by pronounced heat throughout the year, but with noticeable seasonal fluctuations. The annual range of average temperatures spans from 18.4°C in January to 29.3°C in June. The hottest months, with a daily average temperature of around 29°C, are June, July, August, and September. Conversely, January is considered the coolest month, when the average temperature drops to 18.4°C, and minimum night-time temperatures can reach 12.8°C.

The summer period in Dhaka, which roughly lasts from April to October, is distinguished by high temperatures and humidity. Already in April, the average temperature reaches 28.7°C, and maximum daytime values can rise to 33.7°C. From May to September, the thermometer stays consistently high: average temperatures hover around 28.9°C - 29.3°C, and daytime highs often exceed 31-32°C. This period coincides with the monsoon season, so the heat is accompanied by high humidity and frequent rainfall, creating a sensation of sultry and stifling weather, especially from June to August when the number of rainy days is at its peak.

Winter in Dhaka, covering the months from November to February, brings more comfortable and cooler weather. In November, the average temperature is a pleasant 23.7°C, gradually decreasing towards December (19.9°C) and January (18.4°C). During these months, daytime highs range from 24.1°C in January to 29.0°C in November, while night-time lows can drop to 12.8°C - 18.5°C. This creates noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations, especially compared to the summer months when the difference between day and night temperatures is smaller (for example, in July it is only about 5.3°C, whereas in January it is 11.3°C). February marks a gradual warming with an average temperature of 21.3°C, heralding the arrival of the hot season. The winter period is also characterised by minimal rainfall.

Precipitation

Dhaka observes a pronounced seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year, which is typical for a monsoon climate. The year can be clearly divided into dry and wet periods. The dry season falls on the months from November to February. During this time, precipitation is minimal: January is the driest month with 0 mm of rainfall and only one rainy day. February, November, and December are also very dry, with rainfall amounts around 1 mm and only 2-3 rainy days per month. Rain is a rarity during this period.

The transition to the wet season begins in March (2 mm of rainfall, 8 rainy days) and April (4 mm, 13 rainy days), when the amount of precipitation and frequency of rain gradually increase. The main rainy season, or monsoon, covers the period from May to September. In May, rainfall increases to 10 mm with 23 rainy days. June is the month with the highest recorded rainfall — about 11 mm, with rain falling on approximately 27 days. August is notable for the maximum number of rainy days — up to 28 days per month, although the total rainfall in this month (9 mm) is slightly less than in June. July and September are also very wet, with 9 mm and 8 mm of rainfall and 27 and 25 rainy days respectively. During these months, rains occur frequently and can be intense.

October serves as a transitional month from the wet season to the dry one. Rainfall decreases to 6 mm, and the number of rainy days drops to 16. Thus, the wettest months in Dhaka, both in terms of rainfall amount and rain frequency, are June and August. Snowfall is not characteristic of Dhaka due to its tropical climate and high temperatures throughout the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Dhaka, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly to feel comfortable in any weather. Given the tropical monsoon climate, the foundation of your luggage should be light, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you will surely want to explore the city's lively streets. Do not forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, especially if your trip falls during the period from March to October when the sun is most active.

The weather in Dhaka has distinct seasonality. If you are travelling in the dry and relatively cool season (from November to February), when average temperatures range from 18.4°C to 23.7°C and nights can be fresh (down to 12.8°C), plan for the layering principle. A light jacket, sweater, or shawl will be useful for evening walks. Precipitation is minimal during this period. From April to October, the hot and humid season arrives, peaking during the monsoon (June-September). During these months, average temperatures hold around 29°C, and the number of rainy days increases significantly (up to 28 days in August). Be sure to take an umbrella or a light raincoat, as well as clothes that dry quickly. Waterproof shoes or sandals will also be very handy. Insect repellent is also advisable, especially during the rainy period.

Regardless of the time of year, when visiting religious sites or certain official institutions in Dhaka, it is recommended to choose clothing that covers the shoulders and knees out of respect for local traditions. A light scarf or stole can be a versatile accessory that helps both to shield you from the sun and to comply with the dress code when necessary.
