The history of Fantasilandia is a story of a dream come true. The park was founded by agronomist Gerardo Arteaga, who, after meeting priest and social activist Josse Van Der Rest, was inspired by the idea of creating a large-scale family recreation space in Santiago. Thanks to incredible enthusiasm and support, the park was built in a record 115 days and opened its doors on January 26, 1978. Initially, it was quite modest, featuring only eight attractions, including the classic "Bumper Cars," the "Pulpo" (Octopus) carousel, and the "Mansion Siniestra" (Sinister Mansion).
Over time, Fantasilandia has continuously grown and evolved, transforming from a small fairground into the premier amusement park in Chile. The park management has worked constantly on updates, replacing older rides with more modern and thrilling ones. Iconic milestones in its history include the introduction of the "Boomerang" roller coaster and later, in 2008, the "Raptor" suspended coaster, which cost the park approximately 10 million USD. Another significant addition was the "Tsunami" water ride, built under license from the Swiss company Intamin for the park's 30th anniversary.
One of the park's unique features is its contribution not only to entertainment but also to the field of engineering. For instance, "Galaxy," one of the oldest roller coasters, was designed and built with the involvement of the park's own engineers. In over forty years of existence, Fantasilandia has become a true cultural symbol for several generations of Chileans, and its founder, Gerardo Arteaga, was appointed President of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) in 2015. This confirms the park's high status on the world stage.
Interestingly, the park's history is closely linked to charity. The idea for its creation was partly born from a desire to help fund the social organization Hogar de Cristo, for which the founders originally used attractions like bumper cars to raise money. Today, Fantasilandia continues its tradition of constant renewal, regularly opening new attractions and hosting themed events, allowing it to remain a favorite destination that brings joy and unforgettable experiences to both residents and visitors of the capital.
