Current Weather

Planning a trip to Dongxing? In this section, you will find up-to-date weather information and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly plan your getaway in this coastal corner of China.

Overview

Dongxing, located on the border coast of southern China, is governed by a humid subtropical monsoon climate. Its proximity to the Gulf of Tonkin has a defining influence on the weather: sea breezes temper the summer heat and keep the winter months quite mild. Seasonality is clearly defined here, with hot, humid summers giving way to relatively dry and comfortable winters.

The climate is characterized by abundant sunshine in the autumn and high humidity during the summer months. Thanks to the maritime influence, the city rarely experiences extreme temperature swings, making it attractive for tourism almost year-round. However, spring and autumn are considered the most favorable times to visit, as they offer the most pleasant balance of temperature and humidity.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Dongxing is characterized by warm winters and truly hot summers. In July and August, daytime temperatures consistently hover around +30°C and above, and due to high humidity, the perceived temperature can reach +35°C. Night breezes bring some relief, keeping nighttime figures around +25°C.

Winters in this region are very mild: in the coldest month, January, average daytime temperatures are around +17°C, and rarely drop below +11°C at night. A key feature for tourists is the sea water temperature—in the Gulf of Tonkin, it remains comfortable for swimming (+25-30°C) for a long period from May to October. During the winter months, the water cools down to +18-20°C, making beach holidays less ideal but still offering the opportunity for pleasant walks along the coast of China.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Dongxing is unevenly distributed and follows the rhythm of the monsoons. Most of it falls between May and September. August is traditionally considered the wettest month, when the city is often hit by powerful but frequently brief tropical downpours. During this period, rainfall can reach peak levels, with the number of rainy days reaching 25-28 per month.

In contrast, the winter season is moderate and considered the driest. Rain is a rare occurrence in December and January, with skies more often remaining clear or partly cloudy. In autumn, starting from October, the intensity of showers drops sharply, giving way to stable sunny weather. Travelers should keep in mind that typhoons are possible between July and September, bringing heavy rain, though they are usually quickly replaced by sunny days.

Packing Tips

For a summer trip to Dongxing (from June to August), your wardrobe should be based on lightweight and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Given the high solar activity, be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Since summer is monsoon season, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be your faithful companions during walks.

If your visit is planned for the winter months (December–February), it's worth using the layering principle. Despite the mild daytime temperatures, evenings by the sea can be quite chilly, so a windbreaker, sweater, and comfortable closed-toe shoes will be necessary. For spring and autumn excursions around China, a versatile set of jeans, t-shirts, and a light jacket for the evening breeze is ideal.
