Qingyuan
Current Weather
Overview
Qingyuan, located in Guangdong Province, features a typical subtropical monsoon climate. The weather here is characterized by long, hot, and humid summers, followed by relatively mild and cool winters. High humidity is observed throughout the year in this region of China, especially during the warm season when the city is influenced by monsoons.
The seasons are quite distinct: the hot period with frequent rainfall lasts from April to October, while drier and clearer weather sets in from November to March. Winters in this area are usually sunny and comfortable for walking, without severe frosts, making the shoulder seasons and winter months most attractive for tourists who prefer moderate warmth over intense heat.
Temperature
Temperatures in Qingyuan vary throughout the year from a moderately cool +10°C in winter to a hot +33°C at the height of summer. July and August are traditionally considered the sweltering months. During this time, the daytime heat combined with high humidity creates a tropical steam bath effect, and night temperatures rarely drop below +25°C, offering little relief.
The winter period in this corner of China is very mild. In January and February, the coldest months, daytime temperatures usually rise to +14°C...+18°C, while evenings turn cooler—around +11°C. Notably, daily temperature fluctuations are more pronounced in summer and can reach 10 degrees, while in winter, the difference between day and night is less noticeable.
Spring warming arrives rapidly: by March and April, the thermometer steadily climbs, reaching marks of +22°C...+25°C. This time of year, along with mid-autumn, is considered the most favorable for visiting Qingyuan, as the extreme heat hasn't arrived or has already begun to subside, providing a perfect balance of warmth.

Precipitation
Qingyuan is characterized by abundant precipitation, the distribution of which directly depends on monsoon cycles. The main rainy season occurs from May to September. The wettest months are June, July, and August—during this time, the city is covered by powerful tropical downpours, and average rainfall in June can exceed 450 mm.
Unlike the summer period, winter in this part of China is quite dry. Relatively dry weather settles in from October to February. For instance, in December and January, rain is extremely rare, and the number of overcast days is minimal. Snow in the city is an exceptional and atypical phenomenon for the local climate, so travelers should prepare for high humidity rather than snowfall.
Air humidity, reaching 80–90% in the summer months, significantly intensifies the feeling of stuffiness. In spring and autumn, precipitation becomes moderate and is more often replaced by sunny spells, creating comfortable conditions for sightseeing and outdoor walks.

Packing Tips
When heading to Qingyuan between May and October, opt for light clothing made from natural, "breathable" fabrics like cotton and linen. Be sure to bring a reliable umbrella or a high-quality raincoat, as downpours can start suddenly. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong southern sun in China. It's also worth having a light cardigan on hand: air conditioning is often cranked up in indoor spaces and public transport.
For a trip in the winter months (November–February), you'll need a warmer wardrobe. Despite the lack of frost, with temperatures around +10...+14°C and high humidity, a sweater, thick jeans, a windbreaker, and a scarf will come in handy. During the shoulder seasons, the layering principle is the ideal solution: T-shirts paired with light jackets or hoodies will allow you to easily adapt to temperature fluctuations throughout the day.
Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes with good arch support are essential for walking. If you plan to relax by the water, bring swimwear during the warmer months for recreation on the Beijiang River. An insect repellent will also be a useful addition to your luggage, making evening outdoor strolls much more comfortable.
