General Weather Overview

The climate in Zhongshan can be characterised as humid subtropical. This means the city enjoys a long warm, and sometimes hot, period with high humidity, especially in summer, and a relatively mild, drier winter. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are moderate, without extreme cold.

Seasons in Zhongshan are quite distinct. Summer, lasting roughly from May to September, is characterised by high temperatures (the average temperature in July reaches 29.5°C) and significant rainfall, with a peak in rainy days in June and August. Winter, from December to February, is mild, with average temperatures around 16-17°C and minimal rainfall, especially in December. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional periods with comfortable temperatures and moderate amounts of rain.

One of the notable features of the weather in Zhongshan is the pronounced rainy season, which falls in late spring and summer, roughly from May to September. During these months, the number of rainy days increases significantly, reaching 26 days in June and August. At the same time, the winter months, especially December and January, are distinguished by minimal precipitation, making them the driest of the year.

The temperature regime in Zhongshan is characterised by a distinct warm climate throughout the year, yet with noticeable seasonal differences. The annual range of average temperatures extends from approximately 16.1°C in January to 29.5°C in July. The hottest months are traditionally June, July, and August. During this period, the average maximum air temperature confidently stays above 31°C, reaching a peak in July (32.2°C). Nights also remain very warm, with average minimum values around 26-27°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and December, when the average temperature is about 16.1-16.4°C, with average minimum temperatures dropping to 12.5-12.7°C, and daily highs usually not exceeding 19-20°C.

The summer period in Zhongshan, covering the months from May to September, is distinguished by hot and humid weather. Average daily temperatures in June, July, and August hover around 29-29.5°C, while maximum values often exceed the 31-32°C mark. High humidity, accompanied by a significant number of rainy days (especially in June and August, up to 26 days), intensifies the feeling of heat. Nights bring only slight relief, as the temperature rarely drops below 26°C.

The winter months in Zhongshan, from December to February, are characterised by mild and comfortable weather. Average temperatures during this period vary from 16.1°C in January to 17.7°C in February. During the day, the air warms up on average to 19-21°C, and at night the temperature drops to 12-14°C. This time of year is also distinguished by the least amount of rainfall. Daily temperature fluctuations in Zhongshan are generally moderate: the difference between daily highs and nightly lows usually ranges from 5°C at the height of summer to 7-8°C in winter and transitional months, ensuring a relatively smooth transition between day and night temperatures.

Precipitation

Zhongshan observes a clearly defined seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The city experiences a distinct wet season, which falls mainly on the summer months, and a noticeably drier period in winter. Snow is not characteristic of the Zhongshan climate; all precipitation falls predominantly in the form of rain.

The rainy season in Zhongshan usually lasts from May to September. The wettest months, both in terms of rainfall amount and the number of rainy days, are June and August. In these months, an average of 10 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains very frequently – up to 26 days in each of these months. May (8 mm of precipitation, 22 rainy days), July (7 mm, 24 rainy days), and September (9 mm, 22 rainy days) are also characterised by high humidity and frequent rains. Although the absolute amount of precipitation in millimetres might not seem very large, it is the high frequency of rainy days that defines this period as wet.

The dry season in Zhongshan settles in from November and lasts through February. December is the driest month of the year: on average, no precipitation is registered (0 mm), and the number of rainy days is minimal – only about 3. January (1 mm of precipitation, 4 rainy days) and November (1 mm, 6 rainy days) are also distinguished by very low levels of rainfall. February, with an average figure of 2 mm of precipitation and approximately 8 rainy days, concludes this dry period. In these months, rains are rare and, as a rule, insignificant in their intensity.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Zhongshan, it is important to consider its humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons so that your luggage is as functional as possible. From May to September, hot and humid weather prevails here, with frequent rains, especially in June and August. Therefore, during this period, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Do not forget an umbrella or a light raincoat, as well as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the active sun. Comfortable waterproof or quick-drying shoes will also be very handy.

Winter in Zhongshan, from December to February, is quite mild, with average temperatures around 16-17°C and significantly less rainfall. For this time of year, the layering principle is ideal: take light sweaters, cardigans, long-sleeved t-shirts, and one warmer jacket or windbreaker that can be taken off in a warm room or on a sunny day. Spring (March-April) and Autumn (October-November) are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures, but the chance of rain still remains, especially in spring, so a light jacket and an umbrella will not be superfluous.

Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as you will surely want to explore the city. Also, think about a small backpack for day trips, where you can put a bottle of water, a map, and other small items. If you plan to visit temples or official institutions, it is worth taking clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. And, of course, do not forget an adapter for your electronic devices if one is required.
