General Weather Overview

Foshan welcomes its guests with a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by distinctly defined seasons. The city enjoys a mild and relatively dry winter, smoothly transitioning into a warm and increasingly humid spring. Summer in Foshan is hot and rainy, while autumn brings a gradual cooling and a decrease in rainfall, creating comfortable conditions for visiting.

Throughout the year, the temperature in Foshan changes noticeably. The hottest months are July and August, when the average temperature hovers around 29-30°C (for example, in July the average temperature is 29.7°C, and in August it is 29.2°C), while maximum values can reach 32-33°C. Winter, on the contrary, is quite mild: in January and December, the average temperature is approximately 15-16°C (15.4°C in January and 15.8°C in December). A characteristic feature of Foshan's climate is the distinct rainy season, which lasts from late spring to the end of summer. The highest amount of precipitation falls in June (about 12 mm), and the peak in the number of rainy days is observed in June and August (approximately 25 days in each of these months). Winter months, such as December and January, are the driest, with minimal precipitation (about 1 mm) and only a few rainy days (3 days in December and 5 days in January).

Temperature

Foshan experiences a noticeable annual temperature progression, creating diverse conditions for travelers throughout the year. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is around 15.4°C. During this period, nighttime lows can drop to 11.6°C, while daytime highs reach an average of 19.3°C. December is also distinguished by coolness, with an average temperature of 15.8°C (from 11.9°C to 19.7°C). Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July, when the average temperature rises to an impressive 29.7°C. In July, daytime highs regularly exceed 32°C (reaching 32.8°C), and nighttime temperatures remain high, around 26.6°C.

The summer months in Foshan, covering the period from June to August, are characterized by consistently hot weather. In June, the average temperature holds at 28.8°C, with fluctuations from 26.0°C at night to 31.5°C during the day. July, as already noted, is the sweltering month. In August, the average temperature is 29.2°C, with minimum nighttime values around 26.2°C, and daytime highs reaching 32.2°C. The summer period is characterized not only by high daytime temperatures, consistently exceeding 30°C, but also by very warm nights, which, combined with the high humidity typical for this season, creates a sensation of tropical mugginess.

Winter in Foshan, including December, January, and February, offers significantly milder and more comfortable temperature conditions. Monthly average temperatures during this period range from 15.4°C in January to 16.9°C in February. During the day, the air usually warms up to a pleasant 19-21°C (for example, up to 19.3°C in January and up to 20.6°C in February), while nighttime temperatures drop to 11-13°C (11.6°C in January, 13.2°C in February). Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are more noticeable than in summer, averaging about 7-8°C. This means that evenings and mornings can be quite cool, but overall the weather remains mild, without severe frosts.

Precipitation

Foshan sees a clearly defined seasonality in precipitation distribution, which is important to consider when planning a trip. The year is divided into a distinct wet season, falling on the spring and summer months, and a drier autumn-winter period. Starting from spring, the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days gradually increase: if about 3 mm of precipitation falls over 10 days in February, then by April these figures reach 6 mm and 17 rainy days, and in May – 8 mm and 21 rainy days.

The peak of the rainy season in Foshan occurs during the summer months. June is the wettest month in terms of rainfall volume, reaching 12 mm, with rains occurring very frequently – on average 25 days in the month. August also stands out with a high frequency of precipitation, with 25 rainy days, although the total volume is slightly less, about 9 mm. In July and September, there is also a high probability of rain, with 7 mm of precipitation and approximately 21-22 rainy days. During this period, rains can be intense and prolonged, which is characteristic of the subtropical monsoon climate.

In autumn, the amount of precipitation begins to noticeably decrease. In October, about 3 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days drops to 9. Winter in Foshan is the driest period. December, January, and November are characterized by a minimal amount of precipitation, just about 1 mm in each of these months. The frequency of rain is also minimal: only 3 rainy days in December, 5 days in January, and 7 days in November. At this time, if precipitation does occur, it is usually insignificant and short-lived.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Foshan, it is important to choose the right wardrobe, taking into account the peculiarities of the local climate. Winters (December-February) are quite mild here, with an average temperature of about 15-17°C and a small amount of precipitation. For this period, light jackets, sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as closed comfortable shoes are suitable. Summer (June-August) in Foshan is hot and humid, the average temperature holds at the level of 29-30°C, and the number of rainy days increases significantly, especially from May to September. At this time, you will need light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics (cotton, linen), shorts, T-shirts, sandals, as well as a hat and sunscreen.

A key moment when packing for a trip to Foshan is preparing for changeable weather, especially in the transitional seasons – spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In spring and autumn, the temperature is comfortable, but the probability of rain is still high, especially in April-May and September, when the number of rainy days can reach 17-25. Therefore, an umbrella or a light raincoat will become your indispensable companions. The principle of layering in clothing will help you easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day: a T-shirt, a light jumper or cardigan, and a windbreaker will allow you to feel comfortable both in the cool morning and in the warm afternoon.

Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes for long walks are an absolute necessity, because there is plenty to see in Foshan. Given the high humidity in the summer months, it might be worth taking quick-drying clothes or a spare pair of shoes. Do not forget about a personal first aid kit and, if necessary, an adapter for electronics. A light backpack for day excursions, where you can put a bottle of water, an umbrella, and other small items, will also make your journey more comfortable.
