The climate of Tengchong can be described as mild subtropical, significantly influenced by the city's high-altitude location. An atmosphere of "eternal spring" reigns here: extreme heat and severe frosts bypass this region. Thanks to this, travelling here will be comfortable at almost any time of the year, especially for those who do not tolerate sharp temperature changes well.

Summer here is warm but not sweltering, with average highs of around +23°C; however, this period coincides with a distinct rainy season. From June to August, precipitation occurs very frequently, almost daily, so an umbrella or raincoat will become your main companions. In return, the rains bring pleasant coolness and make the surrounding landscapes incredibly green and picturesque.

Winter in Tengchong is cool, but mild and dry, with average temperatures around +8...+10°C. This is an excellent period for those who prefer clear weather: the number of rainy days from November to February is minimal. Such weather is ideal for active walks and visiting the region's famous hot springs, which are particularly enjoyable on cool days.

The main feature of the temperature regime in Tengchong is the pronounced amplitude of daily fluctuations. Travellers should be prepared for the fact that the weather will feel radically different in the morning, during the day, and in the evening. While the sun warms gently during the midday hours, the air cools rapidly immediately after sunset, forcing you to bundle up.

In winter and early spring, this contrast is most evident. In January and February, daytime walks take place at a comfortable +15...+16°C, but at night the thermometer drops to +1.7...+3°C. The temperature difference can reach 13–14 degrees within a single day. The spring months, March and April, maintain this trend: during the day the air warms up to +20...+21°C, but nights remain crisp (+6...+9°C), so a light jacket or sweater is mandatory in your luggage.

Autumn offers perhaps the most balanced temperature comfort. In October, pleasant warmth holds during the day at around +21°C, and the night temperature (+12.6°C) is not as harsh as in winter. However, by November, the daily gap increases again: with daytime highs of +19°C, nights cool down to +6°C. Such a regime makes the principle of layering (wearing multiple layers of clothing) the most reasonable strategy for guests of the city in any season, except for the middle of summer.

In Tengchong, the pattern of precipitation has a distinct seasonality. Summer here is the unconditional rainy season, when precipitation falls with incredible frequency. The wettest period lasts from June to August: up to 29–30 rainy days are recorded in these months, which means almost daily rainfall. However, judging by statistics, the rains here are more often in the nature of a fine drizzle or short-lived showers, as the total volume of accumulated moisture remains relatively small (about 12–14 mm in peak months).

The dry season sets in at the end of autumn and continues throughout the winter. From November to March, the amount of precipitation is minimal, fluctuating within 1–2 mm per month. The "driest" time of the year is December, when the lowest number of wet days is recorded (only about 6). This is the most favourable period for those who want to enjoy walks without the need to constantly keep an umbrella at hand, although a small chance of rain remains even in winter.

Spring and early autumn serve as transitional periods when the weather changes quickly. Already in April and May, the number of rainy days increases sharply (to 17 and 22 respectively), preparing nature for the summer season. September and October also remain quite humid, so when planning a trip during these months, it is worth taking care of waterproof clothing and footwear.

The climate of Tengchong is distinguished by its mildness and lack of extreme temperatures, so the principle of layering in clothing will become your best friend at any time of the year. There is rarely exhausting heat or severe frost here, but temperature changes throughout the day can be noticeable. For comfortable walks, we recommend taking T-shirts, light jumpers, and fleece jackets that can be easily combined. Even in summer, evenings can be fresh, so a light jacket or windbreaker will not go amiss.

Particular attention should be paid to precipitation: from June to August, it rains almost daily, so a quality raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker, and a sturdy umbrella are mandatory items on the packing list. During this period, humidity rises, and things may take a long time to dry, so a spare set of clothes will come in handy. In winter and spring, on the contrary, the weather is predominantly dry and sunny, but nights can be cool (down to +2°C), so warm pyjamas and a mid-season jacket will ensure your comfort.

To explore the picturesque surroundings, volcanic parks, and ancient streets, you will need comfortable shoes. Give preference to proven trainers or light trekking boots with non-slip soles, which are suitable for long walks. Also, regardless of the season, do not forget sunscreen and sunglasses: in the mountains, ultraviolet radiation can be active even in cloudy weather.
