General Weather Overview

The climate in Zunyi is characterised as humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons. This means that travellers can expect noticeable weather changes throughout the year, from cool winters to warm summers, making the timing of your trip an important factor for planning your comfort.

Summer in Zunyi, spanning the months from June to August, is generally warm, with average temperatures in the range of 22-26°C, while maximum values can reach nearly 30°C, especially in August. Winters, by contrast, are quite cool, particularly in January, when the average temperature is around 4.6°C, and night-time temperatures can drop to 1.8°C. Spring and autumn offer more moderate and comfortable temperatures, serving as pleasant transitional periods between the summer heat and winter chill.

One of the key features of the weather in Zunyi is the significant number of rainy days throughout the year, even if the total monthly rainfall in millimetres is not very high. For instance, in May there can be up to 24 days with precipitation, while the highest amount of rainfall (about 9 mm) occurs in June. This suggests that light rain or overcast weather is quite typical for the region, so having an umbrella or a raincoat would be a useful addition to your luggage at almost any time of the year.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Zunyi demonstrates a clearly defined change of seasons with noticeable fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest month is August, when the average air temperature is 25.6°C. During this period, daytime highs often reach 29.9°C, while nights remain warm with minimums around 21.4°C. July is also very warm, with an average temperature of 25.2°C and maximum values up to 29.0°C. Conversely, the coldest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of just 4.6°C. At night, the thermometer can drop to 1.8°C, and the daytime maximum rarely exceeds 7.3°C.

The summer months in Zunyi, from June to August, are characterised by consistently warm, and at times hot, weather. In June, the average temperature holds at 22.3°C (minimum 19.2°C, maximum 25.5°C), creating comfortable conditions for walking. July and August bring higher temperatures which, combined with the high humidity typical of the region (judging by the number of rainy days), can feel quite sultry. Preparing for warm and potentially humid weather will be key to a comfortable stay in the city during this period.

Winter in Zunyi, covering December, January, and February, brings coolness, though severe frosts are rare here. Average temperatures in December (5.5°C) and February (6.5°C) are slightly higher than in January, but the general picture is similar: night-time temperatures fluctuate from 1.8°C to 3.3°C, and daytime temperatures from 7.3°C to 9.7°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in Zunyi are generally moderate throughout the year; the difference between daytime highs and night-time lows is usually between 5.5°C and 8.5°C. This means that although evenings and mornings can be noticeably cooler, there are usually no sharp temperature spikes during the day.

Precipitation

In Zunyi, precipitation is a frequent occurrence throughout most of the year, although its intensity and total monthly amount vary noticeably. The city does not have a clearly defined dry season, but there are periods with greater or lesser amounts of rainfall and rainy days.

The wettest period in Zunyi can be considered late spring and early summer. June stands out as the month with the maximum average rainfall, reaching 9 mm. At the same time, May leads in the number of days with precipitation, when it rains on average for 24 days. March and April are also quite wet, with 20 rainy days and rainfall of 4-6 mm, indicating the approach of the peak rainy season.

The "driest" months in terms of total rainfall volume are February and December, when only about 2 mm falls. December is also characterised by the fewest rainy days — on average 13. Interestingly, August, being one of the warmest months, also brings relatively little rainfall (3 mm) with 15 rainy days, making it less humid compared to the preceding summer months.

Given that even in months with the highest number of rainy days the total amount of precipitation in millimetres remains comparatively small, it can be assumed that Zunyi is characterised more by frequent but not too heavy rain or drizzle. Winter temperatures in the city usually remain above freezing point, so precipitation in the cold season falls predominantly as rain, and snowfall is unlikely.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Zunyi, it is important to consider its humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons and frequent precipitation. Regardless of the time of year, a key element of your luggage should be comfortable waterproof shoes, as the number of rainy days is significant throughout the year. A compact umbrella or a light raincoat will also be very handy, because even if the monthly amount of rainfall is small, drizzling rain can catch you by surprise. The principle of layering clothing is your best friend in Zunyi, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes during the day and between indoors and outdoors.

If your trip falls in winter (December-February), when average temperatures range from 4.6°C to 6.5°C, and can drop to 1.8°C at night, be sure to take warm clothes: sweaters, fleece jackets, an insulated jacket or coat, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. In spring (March-May), the weather gradually warms up, but it can still be cool, especially in March (average temperature 12.3°C). A light jacket, jumpers, and long-sleeved t-shirts will be suitable. By May it becomes significantly warmer (average temperature 19.3°C), but a raincoat is still relevant, as May is one of the "wettest" months in terms of the number of rainy days.

Summer in Zunyi (June-August) is warm and humid, with average temperatures of 22-26°C and highs up to 30°C. Pack light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics, shorts, and t-shirts. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Even in summer, a light raincoat or umbrella will not be amiss, especially in June, when the greatest amount of precipitation falls. In autumn (September-November), the weather becomes cooler, especially by November (average temperature 11.2°C). You will need sweaters, a light jacket, and warmer items for late autumn. And, of course, do not forget protection from the rain, as precipitation is characteristic of this time of year as well.
