What to Do

Adrenaline seekers should challenge themselves on the legendary Sarenne run. It is one of the longest black runs in the world, stretching 16 kilometers and offering an unforgettable sensation of an endless descent. Another unique challenge is the run that passes through a real tunnel carved directly into the rock.

If you're looking for something more relaxed, visit the ice cave, where professional craftsmen create intricate sculptures from frozen water every season. For those who want to trade their skis for other activities, the center of the resort features a modern sports complex with a swimming pool, tennis courts, and gyms.

Don't miss the chance to head down to the historic village of Huez. A walk through its narrow streets among traditional wooden chalets allows you to experience the authentic atmosphere of the Alps. And thanks to the high-altitude glacier, you can even enjoy skiing during the summer period, making it a truly year-round destination.

Getting There

Located in the Isère department, this high-altitude region is approximately 60 kilometers from Grenoble. The car journey from the city takes about an hour along a scenic road famous for its 21 hairpin bends — a legendary section that has made its mark on world cycling history.

If you prefer public transport, regular buses and shuttles run from Grenoble, delivering tourists directly to the central stations. For those who value comfort, taxis or transfers can be booked from Lyon or Grenoble airports, allowing you to reach your destination as quickly as possible. The central ski pass sales point is located at: 131 Rue du Pic Blanc, 38750 Huez.

Added convenience is provided by a cable car connecting the historic village of Huez with the main base at 1,860 meters. This allows for easy movement between the traditional Alpine quarters and the modern infrastructure of the slopes without needing a car.

History & Facts

The rich history of this area began long before the first skiers arrived. Back in the Ancient Roman era, silver, copper, and coal were mined on the slopes of the massif. In the Middle Ages, between the 11th and 14th centuries, silver mines attracted craftsmen from all over Europe until the onset of the "Little Ice Age" made extraction impossible.

A new era began in 1911 when a local teacher, Marie Muller, became one of the first to dare tackle the snowy slopes of Grandes Rousses on skis. The official birth year of the resort is considered 1936: that was when the first school opened and an innovative "Poma" lift system, created by inventor Jean Pomagalski, was launched.

The resort gained worldwide fame through high-performance sports. In 1952, the Tour de France route passed through it for the first time, and in 1968, it hosted Olympic bobsleigh competitions. Today, the combination of Olympic heritage and modern technology makes it one of the most prestigious destinations in the French Alps.

Time Needed

To get a feel for the rhythm of this place and try out the main runs, you will need at least one full day (about 8–10 hours). This is enough time to complete several descents and enjoy panoramic bird's-eye views.

However, if you want to explore every corner of the vast ski area, including the legendary "Sarenne" run, visit the ice cave, and stroll through the streets of the old village, we recommend allowing 2 to 3 days for your trip. This pace will let you combine active sports with relaxed downtime in spas and sampling the local cuisine.

Working Hours

Ski pass sales points and the resort's main lifts operate on a strict schedule to ensure maximum daylight on the slopes. The access system is open daily, from Monday to Sunday.

Opening hours: 08:45 to 16:45. It is recommended to arrive for the opening to be the first to enjoy the fresh corduroy on the slopes and avoid queues during peak hours.
