What to Do

The main activity on the Sukhum Embankment is leisurely strolls along the water's edge. It is worth visiting the classical-style colonnade, which serves as a magnificent photo zone and observation deck. It offers breathtaking views of the bay and mountains, especially impressive in the rays of the setting sun.

Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy examining the facade of the historic Hotel Ritsa, which has preserved the charm of the pre-revolutionary era, and the Abkhaz State Drama Theatre named after S. Chanba, which is the center of the region's cultural life. Notable monuments are also installed along the promenade, including the emotional sculptural composition "To the Mahajirs."

Be sure to try the famous local coffee on sand in one of the small open-air coffee shops. This is a great opportunity to feel the city's rhythm while enjoying the aroma of the drink in the shade of palms and eucalyptus trees. Arched windows, decorative elements of neoclassical buildings, and the sea breeze create a unique sense of peace and tranquility.

History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to ancient times. As early as the 6th century BC, the ancient Greek colony of Dioscurias flourished on the site of the modern embankment. According to legend, the city was named after the mythical twin brothers Dioscuri—Castor and Pollux. At that time, it was a major trading center where the paths of many peoples crossed, as evidenced today by numerous archaeological finds.

The modern look of the promenade began to take shape in the 19th century. The first official mentions of shoreline development date back to 1810. The active development of the city as a prestigious resort began in the late 19th century. At that time, the promenade was called the Mikhailovskaya Embankment in honor of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov. During the Soviet period, it bore the name of the outstanding poet Shota Rustaveli.

The famous snow-white colonnade in the classical style, which became the city's symbol, was built in 1948 based on the design of architect Ya. O. Kvaratskhelia. The current name, Mahajir Embankment, was given in memory of the people who were forced to leave their homeland in the 19th century. Despite historical trials, many architectural masterpieces have been restored and today allow guests to feel the atmosphere of the past century.

Time Needed

A comfortable visit to the embankment usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. This is quite enough time to leisurely walk along the shoreline, which is about one kilometer long, see the architectural monuments, take photos at the famous colonnade, and simply enjoy the seascape.

If you want to dive deeper into the atmosphere—for example, visit the local drama theater, sit in one of the cozy cafes with a cup of coffee on sand, or visit nearby historical sites—the walk could take half a day. Evening is particularly suitable for long walks, when the lights come on and the embankment is filled with a special romance.

Working Hours

The Sukhum Embankment is an open public area, so it is accessible 24 hours a day, daily. The promenade has no official opening hours, allowing tourists to come here at any convenient time—whether it's early morning for a jog or late evening for a romantic dinner by the water.

While the embankment itself is open 24/7, the cafes, museums, and theaters located on it operate according to their own schedules, which we recommend checking in advance on their official resources or information boards.
