Komsomol park

About

Imagine a true natural oasis, hidden from the city noise among shady alleys. Komsomol Park (officially known as the Park of the 50th Anniversary of the Komsomol) is a unique green space that Vladikavkaz is proud of. Here, in the Iriston District, Russia appears in a calm and majestic light, thanks to its ancient trees and rich ecosystem.

The main feature of the park is its amazing flora. Here you can find unique introduced tree species that do not grow anywhere else in the republic. Strolling along the paths, you will see Crimean pine, Italian cypress, and delicate silver birch, creating a unique landscape.

This place is perfect for those seeking solitude with nature without leaving the city limits. In addition to rare plants, the park is home to small forest inhabitants: squirrels and hedgehogs are often seen here, and many species of songbirds fill the air with the living sounds of the forest.

What to Do

Visitors to the park can expect a calm and leisurely holiday. The main activity here is strolling along the shady alleys under the canopy of rare trees. Thanks to recent renovations, the central paths are paved with new stones, making walks comfortable even in cloudy weather. Modern benches have been installed throughout the perimeter, and updated lighting creates a cozy atmosphere in the evening.

Nature lovers can enjoy wildlife photography or simply watch the fauna: the local squirrels are quite friendly, and the bird chorus does not stop throughout the day. For the convenience of visitors, a drinking fountain has been installed in the park, which is very useful during long summer walks.

The park is often chosen for reading books, practicing yoga on the grass, or family picnics. The absence of noisy attractions allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of "wild nature" in the very center of the city, feeling harmony and tranquility.

Getting There

Finding this green corner is easy, as it is located in the Iriston Municipal District, in the heart of the city. The area is bounded by Shmulevich, Pushkinskaya, Razina, and Academician Shengren streets. If you are staying in the center, you can easily reach the park on foot while enjoying views of the city blocks.

For those who prefer public transport, minibuses (marshrutkas) and buses heading to the central stops are suitable. Simply ask the driver to drop you off near Komsomolsky Park or Shmulevich Street. You can also use local taxi services; the ride from main tourist spots will only take a few minutes.

For travelers in their own cars or using navigators, it is most convenient to use the geographic coordinates: 44.6951925, 43.0267324. There is usually enough parking space on the adjacent streets around the park.

History & Facts

The history of this place is fascinating and full of transformations. Few modern visitors know that this territory was originally home to the First City Cemetery, which was established back in the early 19th century. In 1879, the Vladimirovskaya Chapel was built here with funds from merchant Ivan Sitov, becoming an important spiritual center for the townspeople of that era.

The cemetery officially functioned until 1931. After the burials were closed, the territory began to gradually change its appearance. In 1941, the local church was also closed. Decisive changes occurred in the post-war years: as part of city improvements, the headstones were removed, and alleys were laid out and trees planted in their place.

The site was officially established as the Park of the 50th Anniversary of the Komsomol later, transforming from a memorial zone into a popular recreational area. Despite the change in status, the park has retained a special, slightly melancholic, and very peaceful atmosphere that serves as a reminder of its centuries-old past.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through all the main alleys and enjoy the silence, it usually takes from 1 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to see the rare tree species, take some beautiful photos, and take a break from the city bustle.

If you plan to have a small picnic or read a book in the fresh air, you can easily spend half a day in the park. The pleasant coolness in the shade of ancient canopies is particularly conducive to a long rest during hot summer hours.

Working Hours

The park is available to visit daily, allowing guests of the city to choose any convenient time for a walk. It opens its doors at 8:00 AM and stays open until 11:00 PM.

This schedule is convenient both for those who enjoy early morning jogs in the fresh air and for those who prefer to take evening strolls under the light of modern park lamps.
