What to Do

The main reason people come to Birdland is, undoubtedly, the live concerts. The club's program is incredibly rich, featuring performances in various styles: swing, modern jazz, Dixieland, and Latin. Each gig is a unique performance where the art of improvisation takes center stage.

Special mention goes to the traditional Thursday jam sessions. This is a time when the boundaries between the stage and the audience disappear: professionals perform first, and closer to midnight, they are often joined by music students and talented newcomers. Watching music being born in real-time is an invaluable experience for any music lover. Special vocal sessions are also held here once a month.

Between sets or after the program ends, be sure to order a glass of chilled beer or a cocktail at the bar. The cozy setting is perfect for discussing the performance and diving into jazz history — on the club's walls, you can find mentions of legendary performances by the likes of Chet Baker and Art Blakey. It is the perfect place for those who want to feel the authentic musical spirit of Hamburg.

Getting There

The legendary jazz club is located in the Eimsbüttel district at Gärtnerstraße 122. This cozy residential neighborhood is slightly removed from the bustling city center but is excellently connected via the transport network.

The most convenient way to reach the venue is by public transport. You can take the bus or the subway (U-Bahn) to stations in the Eimsbüttel area, after which a short walk along Gärtnerstraße will bring you to the club in just a few minutes. If you prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the city center or the main train station is quick and efficient.

For those planning to arrive by car, please be aware that parking in this area is very limited. As it is a popular destination and the streets are quite narrow, finding a free spot can take some time. Therefore, experienced visitors recommend opting for public transport or a taxi, especially during evening peak hours.

History & Facts

The history of this venue began in 1985, when passionate jazz lover Dieter Reichert opened its doors to the public. The project was supported by the Jazz Federation Hamburg e.V., which allowed the club to quickly become a key landmark on the European music map. Over the decades, jazz titans such as Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Diana Krall, and the Marsalis brothers have performed here.

In 2013, the Reichert family announced the club's closure due to retirement, which came as a shock to the city's cultural scene. However, the hiatus was short-lived: in October 2014, the founder's sons, Ralph and Wolff Reichert, decided to continue their father's legacy. Teaming up with professional restaurateurs, they breathed new life into Birdland while preserving its unique historical spirit.

The modern chapter of the club's life is marked not only by loyalty to tradition but also by critical acclaim. In 2023, the concert "Hamburg reads burned books and sings burned songs" was officially recognized as the Best Concert of the Year by Clubkombinat Hamburg e.V. Today, the establishment is considered one of the most traditional yet relevant jazz cellars in all of Germany.

Time Needed

A visit to the club is a full-evening event. A standard concert or participation in a jam session usually takes about 3-4 hours. This is enough time to enjoy the musicians' virtuosity at a leisurely pace, sample the local bar menu, and soak in the jazz cellar atmosphere.

If you plan to attend the jam session on a Thursday, keep in mind that these evenings can last late into the night, especially if you decide to participate in the improvisation yourself or want to stay for the performances of the most talented newcomers.

Working Hours

The club operates on an evening schedule, opening its doors to guests from Tuesday to Saturday, from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Monday and Sunday are its days off.

It is worth remembering that the famous jam sessions on Thursdays begin at 8:30 PM, while the more informal part of the program for newcomers starts closer to 10:00 PM.
