General Weather Overview

The climate in Bandar Abbas, located in Iran, is characterised as hot desert (arid). The city is distinguished by high temperatures throughout the year and extremely low rainfall levels. Visitors should expect predominantly sunny and dry weather, regardless of the season, as the number of rainy days is minimal even in the "wettest" months.

In Bandar Abbas, two main seasons are clearly defined. Summer, lasting roughly from May to September, is extremely hot and arid, with average temperatures often exceeding 30°C (reaching 34°C in June-July), and maximum values regularly rising to 38-39°C. During this period, precipitation is practically absent. Winter, from November to March, brings more moderate but still warm temperatures, averaging from 17.8°C in January to 22.8°C in March. Even during the winter months, rainfall remains minimal, rarely exceeding 1-2 mm per month.

Temperature

Bandar Abbas experiences significant annual temperature variations, typical of a hot climate. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature is around 17.8°C, with average minimums at 13.5°C and maximums around 22.0°C. Conversely, the peak heat falls on June and July: in June, the average temperature reaches 34.2°C (average maximum 38.9°C), and in July – 34.3°C (average maximum 38.1°C), making these the sweltering months of the year.

The summer period in Bandar Abbas, covering the months from May to September, is characterised by extremely high temperatures. Already in May, the average temperature exceeds 31°C, and from June to August, the thermometer consistently stays above the 34°C mark on average. Daytime highs in these months often approach 38-39°C, while nighttime temperatures rarely drop below 29-30°C, especially in July and August. This period is distinguished by dry and exhausting heat, as rainfall in the summer months, according to data, tends towards zero.

Winter in Bandar Abbas, from December to February, brings significant relief from the summer heat. Temperatures at this time of year are mild and comfortable. Monthly averages fluctuate from 17.8°C in January to almost 20°C in February. Daytime highs usually range between 22-24.5°C, and nighttime lows drop to 13.5-15.5°C, making the weather pleasant. Throughout the year, moderate temperature fluctuations between day and night are observed, averaging from 7.6°C to 9.6°C, providing some nocturnal cooling even during hot periods.

Precipitation

The city of Bandar Abbas experiences a very arid climate with minimal precipitation throughout the year. The city is characterised by a long dry season and a short period when a negligible amount of precipitation falls, primarily as rain.

The driest period in Bandar Abbas falls on the months from May to October. During this time, precipitation is practically absent. June and September are absolutely dry months, when on average not a single millimetre of rainfall occurs, and the number of rainy days is zero. In May, July, August, and October, measurable precipitation is also usually not registered, although there may be 1-2 days classified as "wet," which likely indicates traces of moisture or very insignificant rainfall.

The relatively "wet" season, if it can be called that, lasts from November to April. However, even in these months, the amount of rainfall is extremely low. January stands out as the "wettest" month, but even then, only an average of 2 mm of precipitation falls, distributed over approximately 4 rainy days. In the other months of this period (February, March, April, November, December), about 1 mm of rainfall occurs, falling on 2-3 days. The nature of the precipitation is most likely light drizzle or very brief showers. Given the climatic data, snowfall is not characteristic of Bandar Abbas.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Bandar Abbas, it is important to consider its hot and predominantly dry climate. For most of the year, especially from May to September, when average temperatures consistently exceed 30-34°C and maximums can reach 38-39°C, you will need light, loose clothing made of natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen to protect against the intense sun, as solar activity here is very high.

In the cooler months, from December to February, daytime temperatures remain comfortable, averaging 17-20°C, however, evenings and nights can be fresher, with temperatures around 13-15°C. During this period, a light jacket, sweater, or cardigan will come in handy. The principle of layering clothing will be especially relevant in the transition seasons (March-April and October-November), allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Considering that strong winds are not a characteristic feature of the weather, primary attention should be paid to sun protection and thermal comfort.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are a must-have for a traveller, as you will surely want to explore the city. Given that rainfall in Bandar Abbas is minimal throughout the year (in most months it is practically non-existent, and in the "wettest" months like January, only about 2 mm falls), you are unlikely to need a bulky umbrella or raincoat. A light folding umbrella might be useful in case of rare short rain in the winter months, or it can be used for additional protection from the sun on particularly hot days.
