Current Weather
General Weather Overview
Kish Island is characterized by a hot desert climate. This means it is sunny almost all year round with very little rainfall. Air temperature remains high for most of the year, making the island attractive for lovers of heat and beach holidays.
Two main seasons can be distinguished on the island: a long, scorching, and exceptionally dry summer, lasting roughly from April-May to September-October, and a warm, also predominantly dry winter, covering the months from December to February. Spring and autumn are short transitional periods. The most notable feature of the climate is the extremely low amount of precipitation – rain is a great rarity here, especially in the summer months when it practically never occurs. Even in the "wetter" winter months, rainfall is minimal.
Temperature
The climate on Kish Island is characterized by significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. The hottest month is August, when the average temperature reaches 34.8°C, and maximums can rise to 38.4°C. The minimum night temperature in August also remains high, around 31.3°C. Overall, the summer period, from June to September, is distinguished by sweltering weather: average daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30°C, and nights remain very warm. July is also one of the hottest months with an average temperature of 34.6°C.
Winter on Kish Island, conversely, is mild and comfortable. The coolest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 18.2°C. Daytime highs in January reach a pleasant 22.0°C, while nighttime lows drop to 14.5°C. December and February also offer similar weather conditions, with average temperatures around 20.6°C and 19.6°C respectively. During these months, daytime temperatures fluctuate around 22-24°C, and nighttime – around 15-17°C. Diurnal temperature variations are most noticeable in the winter and transitional months, when the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can be around 7-9°C. In summer, this difference varies: in July and August it is about 7°C, however, in June it can reach 8.5°C, which is comparable to winter figures.
The transitional seasons – spring and autumn – demonstrate a gradual change in temperatures. In April, the average temperature is already 26.8°C, and in May it rises to 31.0°C, heralding the onset of the hot summer. In autumn, a smooth decrease occurs: in October, the average temperature holds at 29.7°C, and in November it drops to 24.8°C, creating comfortable conditions for visiting the island.
Precipitation
Kish Island is characterized by an extremely arid climate throughout most of the year. Precipitation here is a rare and meager phenomenon, which defines a distinct and prolonged dry season.
A small amount of precipitation is possible primarily in the winter months. January is considered the "wettest" month of the year, yet even during this period, only about 2 mm of rainfall occurs, distributed over an average of 3 rainy days. In December and November, insignificant precipitation may also be observed, around 1 mm in each of these months, with 1-2 rainy days respectively. The nature of such precipitation is, as a rule, very light and brief rain.
From February right through to October, practically complete drought settles over Kish Island. The driest period lasts from May to October inclusive: in these months, according to statistical data, not a single millimeter of precipitation falls, and not a single rainy day is registered. Interestingly, in February, March, and April, with zero average precipitation, a small number of "wet days" are still noted (2 days in February, and 1 day each in March and April). This may indicate extremely insignificant, almost imperceptible precipitation. Thus, for most of the year, the weather on Kish Island remains dry and sunny.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Kish Island, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, considering its hot and predominantly dry climate. From May to October, the island welcomes guests with sweltering sunny weather: the average air temperature ranges from 30°C to 35°C, and at the peak of summer, it can rise above 38°C. During this period, the basis of your luggage should be very light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF factor to protect against intense ultraviolet radiation. Swimwear and comfortable sandals or flip-flops will be indispensable. Evenings also remain warm, so a light wrap is useful more for sun protection during the day than for evening chill.
From December to February, milder weather settles on Kish Island with average temperatures around 18-20°C, while minimum night temperatures can drop to 14-16°C. For this time of year, the principle of layering is ideal: t-shirts, light jumpers, cardigans, or a fleece jacket, as well as a windbreaker or a not-too-warm jacket, especially for evening walks. Comfortable trousers and closed shoes will ensure comfort. In the transitional months, such as November, March, and April, the weather also calls for layered clothing, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day – from warm daylight hours to cooler evenings.
Regardless of the season, precipitation on Kish Island is an extremely rare occurrence, so you will hardly need a bulky umbrella; at most – a very light foldable model in case of a single short rain in the winter months (January-February). Always have comfortable walking shoes with you, as the island offers many interesting places to explore. Do not forget to drink clean water regularly to avoid dehydration, especially during the hot period. A light scarf or shawl can prove to be an surprisingly useful accessory – both for additional sun protection and against an occasional evening breeze.
