Weather Overview

Dubai is characterised by a hot desert climate. This means you can expect year-round sunshine, very high temperatures, especially during the summer months, and extremely low rainfall. The weather here is predictable, making it easy to plan active leisure or relaxation on the beach, although seasonal temperature fluctuations should be taken into account.

The year in Dubai can be roughly divided into two main seasons: a hot summer and a milder winter. Summer, which lasts approximately from May to October, is distinguished by intense heat: average temperatures often rise above 30-35°C, and maximums can exceed 40°C. Winter, from December to March, is a pleasant, warm, and sunny time with average temperatures usually ranging from 19°C to 25°C, making this period the most comfortable and popular for visiting the city.

Precipitation in Dubai is a rare and irregular phenomenon, falling mainly in the cooler months such as January, March, and April, but even then, the amount is minimal. For most of the year, especially from May to November, it is practically always dry and sunny here. Such weather consistency makes Dubai an attractive destination for those seeking a guaranteed sunny holiday, however, one should be prepared for high air temperatures during the summer period.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Dubai is distinguished by significant annual fluctuations characteristic of a desert climate. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average temperature holds at 35.6-35.8°C, and daytime highs regularly exceed 40°C, sometimes reaching 40.9°C. The coolest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of about 19.8°C, when nighttime temperatures can drop to 15.5°C, and daytime highs reach a comfortable 24.2°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures is approximately from 20°C to 36°C, creating two distinct seasons.

The summer period in Dubai, which covers the months from May to October, is characterised by intense and persistent heat. Already in May, the average air temperature rises to 30.8°C, and maximum values reach 36.4°C. The peak heat occurs in June, July, and August: average temperatures in these months are 34.2°C, 35.8°C, and 35.6°C respectively. During the day, the thermometer often surpasses the 40°C mark (for example, in August up to 40.9°C), and even nights do not bring significant relief, with minimum temperatures remaining within 28-30°C. In September and October, the heat gradually subsides, but average temperatures remain high – 33.6°C and 30.1°C respectively.

Winter in Dubai, lasting roughly from December to March, offers significantly milder and more pleasant weather conditions, ideal for tourism. In December, the average temperature is about 21.8°C, and in January and February, it hovers around 19.8-20.9°C. Daytime highs in these months are usually in the range of 24°C to 26°C, creating a comfortable atmosphere for walking and sightseeing. Nights become noticeably cooler, with temperatures dropping to 15.5-17.2°C. By March, the temperature begins to gradually rise, reaching an average of 23.5°C, with maximum values up to 28.5°C. Throughout the year, but especially noticeable in the winter months, substantial diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed: the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows is often 8-10°C, and sometimes more.

Precipitation

Dubai is known for its extremely arid climate, and precipitation here is a rare and scarce phenomenon. The city experiences a prolonged and distinct dry season, which covers most of the year. In fact, from May to November inclusive, there is practically no rain in Dubai: the average monthly rainfall in these months is 0 mm, and the number of rainy days is also zero. This guarantees almost continuous sunshine and dry weather throughout this long period.

A small amount of precipitation, if it happens at all, falls predominantly in the cooler months – from December to April. The "wettest" months, considering the general aridity, can be considered January, March, and April, when the average monthly rainfall reaches 1 mm. January also stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 3 days. In February and December, despite the average rainfall being 0 mm, occasional rainy days are also possible (1 and 2 days respectively). The nature of precipitation is typically short and light rains; snow is uncharacteristic for Dubai.

Thus, when planning a trip, one can expect an almost complete absence of rain from May to November. In the winter and early spring months (December-April), the probability of precipitation is slightly higher, but it remains extremely rare and insignificant. Even in the "rainiest" periods, the number of days with precipitation does not exceed three per month, making Dubai one of the driest cities in the world.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Dubai, prioritise light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, as it is warm and sunny here almost all year round. This is particularly relevant for the summer months (from May to October), when the average air temperature often exceeds 35-40°C, and the maximum can reach 40.9°C. During this period, choose loose-fitting clothing in light colours. Regardless of the season, do not forget sunscreen with high SPF, sunglasses, and a head covering for protection against the intense sun. Comfortable walking shoes will also be your indispensable companion for exploring the city.

In the milder winter months (from December to March), when the average temperature ranges from 19.8°C to 23.5°C, it is still very comfortable in summer clothes during the day. However, evenings can be cooler, with temperatures dropping to 15.5°C - 18.5°C, so it is worth taking a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl. The principle of layering in clothing will help you easily adapt to temperature changes between air-conditioned spaces and the outdoors. As for precipitation, it is extremely rare in Dubai: in most months there is none at all (0 mm), and in January, March, and April, no more than 1 mm falls, so an umbrella will most likely not be needed. Also consider ensuring that clothing is sufficiently modest for visiting public places, which will also help protect against the sun.
