What to Do

The opportunities for active and fun leisure here are virtually endless. The modern bowling alley remains the main draw for groups, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Guests can compete in American pool, snooker, or ping pong, as well as test their accuracy in interactive darts and shuffleboard—a rarity in this area.

For those who miss the aesthetic of the eighties and nineties, the Barcadia zone is a must. It is a true treasure trove of retro machines, where classic video games sit alongside modern cocktails. If you want to showcase your vocal talent, professionally equipped karaoke rooms are at your service.

The gastronomic side of the complex deserves a special mention. At the Holy Smoke restaurant, you can try authentic barbecue prepared according to all the rules of pitmaster craftsmanship. The evening atmosphere is complemented by three bars with an extensive drinks menu and regular DJ performances, turning a standard evening into a full-blown party.

Getting There

The entertainment complex is conveniently located in the heart of the city on Sheares Street, just a few steps from the lively Washington Street. Thanks to its central location, reaching it on foot from any point in the historic center is quite easy.

If you prefer public transport, you can use city buses that stop on the surrounding streets. Major transport hubs are within walking distance, making this venue easily accessible even for first-time visitors to the city. A taxi from the main railway station or the city's central squares will get you to the entrance in just a few minutes.

For those traveling by private or rental car, there are parking areas nearby. However, it's worth keeping in mind that streets in the center can be quite busy, so walking or taking a taxi may be more convenient options.

History & Facts

The building that today houses the vibrant life of Mardyke Bowl has an impressive history dating back more than 250 years. It acquired its current appearance between 1873 and 1875. A substantial sum for that time—4,500 pounds sterling—was spent on its construction, and the result lived up to expectations: the building was recognized as one of the most beautiful in the city.

An interesting architectural feature is the massive ceiling beams and rafters made of Canadian pine. This structural strength was essential: originally, the building housed the warehouses of the Woodford Bourne and Co. trading company, where heavy barrels of wine and spirits were stored. For two and a half centuries, this firm was a key player in the market, using the building as a bottling and distribution center.

In 1983, the warehouse spaces were given a new life, transforming into a billiards club and later into a family entertainment center. The path to success was not without its challenges: in 1993, a serious fire occurred due to faulty electrical wiring. However, in 1995, after careful restoration, the complex reopened its doors, preserving its historical charm.

Today, the dressed limestone facade continues to delight passersby. The building was officially honored with the Cork Better Buildings Awards for the best pub frontage, highlighting Mardyke Bowl's status as one of the city's architectural gems.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to this entertainment center, you should consider how extensive a program you've chosen. On average, guests need between 2 and 4 hours to fully enjoy everything the venue has to offer.

If your goal is just a couple of rounds of bowling and some drinks at the bar, 1–2 hours might be enough. However, if you decide to check out the arcade zone, try the local barbecue, and stay for a musical performance, it’s best to set aside at least half a day for your visit.

Working Hours

The complex welcomes guests daily, making it a great option for fun any day of the week. From Monday to Thursday, the doors are open from 12:00 to 23:30. On Friday and Saturday, the venue stays open longer—until 00:30—while on Sunday, it closes at 23:00.

Since the schedule may change due to public holidays or private events, it is highly recommended to check for up-to-date information on the official website or the complex's social media pages before your visit.
