How to get to Yangyang

Getting There: Introduction

Located on the picturesque eastern coast, Yangyang attracts travellers with its magnificent beaches and reputation as the surfing capital of Korea. You can reach this cosy resort in South Korea in various ways, whether by a quick flight, a bus journey, or a scenic drive along the sea.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the coast is by air, as the city is served by Yangyang International Airport (YNY). This aviation hub accepts domestic flights from other regions of the country, as well as some international routes, ensuring convenient connections with the outside world.

The airport is located quite close to the main resort areas, so the transfer to your hotel or the beach will not take much time. The presence of its own airport makes Yangyang one of the most accessible holiday destinations in Gangwon-do province.

By Train

Since there is no railway station in the city of Yangyang itself, direct train service is not available here. Travellers usually choose high-speed KTX trains travelling to neighbouring major transport hubs on the east coast, such as Gangneung.

After reaching the nearest station by rail, tourists cover the remaining part of the journey by intercity bus or taxi. This is a convenient option for those who want to combine the comfort of a train with the opportunity to admire the views from a car window on the final stretch of the journey.

By Bus

Bus services remain one of the most popular and economical transfer options. A trip from the capital, the city of Seoul, will take just about 2.9 hours, covering a distance of 163 km, making this route ideal for weekend trips. Convenient connections with other regions are also established: the journey from the city of Wonju (138 km) will last approximately 3.4 hours.

For those travelling from more distant places, for example, from the city of Chungju (245 km), the road will take about 4.8 hours on a comfortable express bus. Intercity buses in Korea are distinguished by a high level of comfort and punctuality, allowing you to relax on the way.

Roads in this region are distinguished by high-quality surfacing and clear navigation, making the trip comfortable even for first-time visitors to Korea.

If you do not have personal transport, you can use a taxi for the trip from neighbouring cities, however, it is worth noting that the cost will be significantly higher than public transport. Travel Tips

To make your stay in Yangyang as pleasant and hassle-free as possible, we have prepared a list of important practical recommendations. Considering the specifics of the region, these tips will help you plan your trip better.

  1. Clothing and Seasonality: It is hot and humid here in summer, so choose light clothing and do not forget your swimwear. In winter, strong winds blow on the coast — a windproof jacket is mandatory.
  2. Transport: To move between beaches and attractions, it is most convenient to use a rental car or taxi, as local buses may run with long intervals.
  3. Finances: The official currency is the Won (KRW). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but it is better to have cash with you for purchases at traditional markets or street stalls.
  4. Connectivity and Apps: Google Maps works limitedly in Korea. It is recommended to install local applications Naver Map or KakaoMap for navigation and Papago for translation.
  5. Etiquette: It is customary to remove shoes when entering residential premises and some traditional restaurants. Money or items should be passed and received with two hands as a sign of respect.
  6. Safety: The city is very safe, but always pay attention to flags and lifeguard warnings on the beaches, especially during the typhoon season when waves can be high.
  7. Power Outlets: Type C and F sockets are used (standard voltage 220 V), the same as in most European countries, so an adapter may not be needed.
  8. Gastronomy: Do not miss the chance to try local delicacies, especially the famous pine mushrooms (matsutake), which this region is famous for in autumn.

By following these simple rules, you will be able to easily adapt to the local rhythm of life and get the most out of your holiday on the Korean coast.
