Klaipėda Castle

About

Where the Danė River meets the waters of the Curonian Lagoon stands Klaipėda Castle—one of the most significant historical symbols cherished by Klaipėda. Founded in the 13th century as Memelburg fortress, this citadel was the region's main defensive hub for centuries, and today it has transformed into a fascinating open-air museum complex.

The modern castle is a unique combination of medieval ruins and modern pavilions. Here you will find the famous Castle Museum (Pilies muziejus), where guests can see rare archaeological artifacts and detailed reconstructions of the fortifications. Walking through the territory, you will see the remains of bastions and massive towers that once protected these lands, representing an important part of the cultural heritage protected by Lithuania.

Today, the castle attracts not only history buffs but also those seeking beautiful views of the port and sailing yachts. The preserved fragments of brickwork, the Friedrich and Charles bastions, and the mysterious underground passages create a special atmosphere of antiquity, making the site a must-visit for any tourist.

What to Do

The highlight of your program will be a visit to the Castle Museum (Pilies muziejus), located right in the dungeons and restored parts of the fortress. Here you can see unique artifacts: from ancient weapons and armor to exquisite jewelry found during excavations. Be sure to pay attention to the models that vividly show how the castle's appearance changed over the centuries.

Fans of panoramic views should climb the preserved castle ramparts and bastions. From here, a magnificent view opens up over the Curonian Lagoon, the port terminals, and cruise ships. This spot is ideal for photo sessions, especially at sunset when the red brick walls take on a fiery hue against the blue water.

The castle grounds often serve as a venue for historical reenactments and festivals. You might find yourself at a knight tournament or a workshop on ancient crafts. After exploring the exhibits, it is pleasant to walk along the Danė embankment to the yacht marina, where dozens of modern vessels sway on the waves, creating a contrast between antiquity and modernity.

Getting There

Getting to the historical complex at Priešpilio g. 2 is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the city, where the Danė River flows into the lagoon. The most pleasant way is to walk from the Old Town; a stroll from Theatre Square will take only about 5–10 minutes.

If you are using public transport, bus routes No. 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 will suit you. You should get off at the "Pilies muziejus" or "Teatro aikštė" stops, from where the fortress ramparts are literally just a few hundred meters away. For those arriving from other Lithuanian cities by train or bus, the journey from the station will take about 15 minutes by taxi or 20–25 minutes by city transport.

Drivers should note that parking directly at the castle may be paid, but convenient parking zones are also located on the adjacent streets of the Old Town. If you are traveling by bicycle, there are excellent paths along the embankment, allowing you to combine a visit to the castle with an active ride.

History & Facts

The history of this site began on July 29, 1252, when the knights of the Livonian Order founded the wooden fortress of Memelburg. Initially, the fortification was planned for a swampy area, but a year later, the castle was moved to the more reliable right bank of the Danė River. This moment is considered the starting point for the development of the city, which later received Lübeck law rights.

During the 15th–16th centuries, the castle was constantly modernized, transforming from a wooden outpost into a powerful brick citadel. Massive red brick walls and five majestic towers, including the seven-story Great Tower, made it practically impregnable. The fortress survived numerous sieges, fires, and reconstructions, reflecting changes in the art of fortification and the political situation in the region.

By the 18th century, the castle had lost its military significance and eventually began to fall into ruin. In the 19th century, part of the buildings was dismantled, and the stones were used for city needs. However, modern archaeology has breathed new life into the ruins: excavations have uncovered more than 10,000 unique artifacts, which today form the basis of the museum collection and allow for a detailed recreation of the daily life of Memel's medieval defenders.

Time Needed

To explore all the exhibitions at a leisurely pace and walk around the grounds, we recommend allowing 1.5 to 2.5 hours for your visit. This time will be quite sufficient to examine the archaeological finds in the underground halls and take atmospheric photos against the backdrop of the ancient walls.

If your visit coincides with a cultural festival or a knight tournament, your stay may extend to 3–4 hours. A walk along the adjacent embankment and a look at the yacht club can also be a pleasant addition to the main tour, so try not to schedule your next program point too tightly.

Working Hours

The Klaipėda Castle Museum complex welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00. Please note that on Mondays and Sundays the museum is closed, so it is better to plan your visit on weekdays or Saturday.

The castle grounds themselves and the walking paths around them are accessible for viewing at almost any time, but to enter the exhibition halls, you must adhere to the official working schedule. On public holidays, the schedule may change, so it is worth checking the information in advance.
