Alexander Pushkin House-Museum

About

In the heart of the historic district for which Chișinău is famous, lies a unique literary and architectural monument—the Pushkin Museum. This memorial complex is located in the former guest house of merchant Ivan Naumov, where the young poet stayed in the autumn of 1820 upon arriving for his southern exile. Today, it is one of the few surviving buildings in the world that remembers Alexander Pushkin’s presence within its original walls.

The museum ensemble in Moldova includes not only the famous "Pushkin house" but also several additional buildings with extensive exhibits. The atmosphere of the first half of the 19th century has been recreated here, allowing visitors to see authentic household items, antique engravings, and personal belongings of the poet's contemporaries that surrounded him during his life in Bessarabia.

Of particular value are the collections of rare editions of Pushkin's works written right here, as well as decorative art objects from the late 18th century. Thanks to large-scale restoration, the museum has managed to preserve its special energy, becoming an important cultural center that attracts researchers and poetry lovers from all over the world.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this museum is the opportunity to touch living history in the memorial rooms. You can see the conditions in which the poet lived during his first months in Chișinău and examine the antique furniture, writing desks, and interior items that recreate the spirit of that era. Particular attention should be paid to the hall with rare books and manuscripts, which houses materials related to the writing of the first chapters of "Eugene Onegin".

In addition to touring the indoor halls, be sure to take a walk through the cozy inner courtyard. This quiet place is perfect for taking a break from the city noise and imagining Alexander Pushkin himself walking along these paths. The courtyard often serves as a venue for poetry evenings and cultural events, and the architecture of the house itself provides a wonderful backdrop for commemorative photos.

For a deeper immersion into the context, we recommend taking an audio guide or joining a group tour. Guides tell fascinating stories about Pushkin's meetings with the local nobility, his duels, and the impressions of Moldovan culture that were later reflected in his immortal verses and poems, such as "The Gypsies."

Getting There

Finding this memorial complex is easy, as it is located in the central district of the capital at 19 Anton Pann Street. If you are already walking through the center, the journey from Stephen the Great Park or the central square will take no more than 15–20 minutes at a leisurely pace through the old quarters.

For those who prefer public transport, trolleybuses and buses passing through the center (such as routes No. 1, 5, 10) are suitable. You should get off at the stop nearest to Pushkin Street and walk about 500–700 meters. Alternatively, you can always use taxi services like Yandex Go or Bolt; a trip from the airport will take about half an hour and cost around 100–150 lei.

If you are traveling by private car, keep in mind that parking directly at the museum gates may be limited due to the narrow streets of the old city. For navigation, it is convenient to use the direct link to Google Maps, which will lead you exactly to the entrance of this quiet historical corner.

History & Facts

The museum owes its existence to the diligent work of the renowned Pushkin scholar Boris Alekseevich Trubetskoy. It was he who, among the city's ruins, discovered the former guest house of the merchant Naumov, where the great poet found shelter in 1820. Thanks to Trubetskoy's initiative and a 1946 government decree, the historical building was saved and transformed into a place of remembrance.

The grand opening took place on February 10, 1948, making it the first Pushkin museum to open in the post-war period. The creation of the exhibition involved not only scholars but also Moldovan writers, architects, and even Komsomol volunteers who helped clear the territory of the future museum complex during community work days.

Alexander Pushkin himself arrived in these parts on September 21, 1820, at the age of 21. Although it was an exile, the Bessarabian period was incredibly productive for him. It was here, within the walls of this modest house, that the foundations for the great novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" were laid, and dozens of other famous works were created, forever entering the golden treasury of world literature.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the halls and soak in the 19th-century atmosphere, it usually takes about 1–1.5 hours. This time is quite sufficient to study the main memorial exhibition, examine the rare book editions, and stroll through the small inner courtyard.

If you decide to use the services of a tour guide, who will talk in detail about the poet's life and work during his exile, the visit may last up to two hours. In any case, a visit to the museum will not take up the entire day, allowing you to easily combine it with a walk to other historical sites in the capital.

Working Hours

The museum hospitably opens its doors to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. The schedule is quite convenient for tourists: exhibitions are accessible from 10:00 to 16:00. It should be noted that Monday is a day off when the museum is closed for maintenance.

As there may be changes to the schedule due to holidays or special events, guests are advised to check information on official resources or by phone before their visit.
