General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Katsina can be described as hot semi-arid, which is typical for the northern part of the country. The weather here is defined by a clear division into dry and wet seasons, with high temperatures persisting throughout most of the year. Travellers should be prepared for bright sunshine and significant heat, especially during the spring months prior to the onset of the rains.

The dry season lasts from October to May and is distinguished by an almost complete absence of rainfall. During this time, particularly in April and May, the air warms up the most, and daytime temperatures often exceed 38°C. However, the winter months (December and January) bring relative coolness, when the average temperature drops to a comfortable 22°C, making this one of the most pleasant times to visit.

The wet season arrives in June and continues until September, reaching its peak in terms of rainy days in August. Precipitation brings long-awaited freshness, lowering the average temperature to 26–28°C, but noticeably increasing humidity levels. This is a period when nature comes alive, but tourists should take the high probability of downpours into account when planning walks around the city.

Temperature

The climate in Katsina is characterised by high temperatures throughout most of the year, with a clear distinction between the dry and wet seasons. The hottest period falls during the spring months, immediately before the rains begin. In April and May, daytime heat reaches its peak: average highs rise to 39°C, creating intense heat conditions that tourists should consider when planning excursions.

The most favourable time for a trip falls in December and January. During these months, daytime highs reach quite comfortable values of around 29°C. However, it is worth being prepared for contrasts: nights in the dry season can be quite fresh, when the thermometer drops to 14–15°C, creating a perceptible temperature difference throughout the day.

The summer period, which coincides here with the rainy season (from July to September), brings a noticeable softening of the heat. Thanks to cloud cover and precipitation, August becomes one of the "coldest" months of the year with an average temperature of around 26°C. At this time, daily temperature fluctuations are minimal, and unlike the dry winter, the air feels more humid and mild.

Precipitation

The climate of this region is characterised by a clear division of the year into two contrasting periods: arid and wet. If you are planning to visit the city of Katsina between November and April, you definitely will not need an umbrella. During these months, precipitation is practically unobserved, and stable dry weather sets in, making this period predictable for planning open-air excursions.

The rainy season arrives gradually: the first signs of humidity appear in May, and in June the number of rainy days increases to eight. The peak of the season falls in August, which is considered the wettest month of the year. According to statistics, precipitation at this time can fall on more than 20 days in the month, bringing with it necessary coolness and reviving the local nature after a long drought.

By September, the intensity of the rains begins to decline, although the weather still remains sufficiently humid. October serves as a short transitional period when rains become a rarity (totaling only about 3 days with precipitation), finally giving way to the dry season by the beginning of November. Snow does not occur in this region due to consistently high temperatures year-round.

What to Pack

When planning a journey to Katsina, primarily orient yourself towards the hot weather characteristic of this region for most of the year. The basis of your luggage should consist of clothing made from light natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen, preferably in light shades for protection against overheating. Do not forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream, as the sun here is very active, especially in spring when temperatures often exceed +30°C.

If your trip falls during the period from December to February, it is worth taking a warm sweater, jumper, or light jacket: nights and early mornings at this time can be cool, with temperatures around +14...+15°C. For travelling during the rainy season, which is most intense from July to September, be sure to pack a compact umbrella or raincoat in your suitcase, and also take care to have waterproof shoes with non-slip soles.

For excursions and walks around the city, comfortable trainers are best suited, as they will protect your feet from dust during the arid months and ensure comfort during long walks. It is recommended to adhere to the principle of layering in clothing: a combination of a t-shirt and a light shirt will allow you to feel comfortable as weather conditions change throughout the day.
