General Weather Overview

The climate in Rawalpindi is characterized by distinct seasonal variations and can be classified as a subtropical type with noticeable monsoon influence. The city experiences hot summers and relatively cool winters, as well as two transitional seasons – spring and autumn. Overall, the weather here is distinguished by a significant temperature range and uneven precipitation distribution throughout the year.

The summer months, especially from May to September, are the hottest, with average temperatures often exceeding 25-30°C, and reaching peak heat in June. Meanwhile, July and August stand out as the period with the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days, indicating the arrival of the summer monsoon. Winter, covering the period from December to February, brings coolness with average temperatures around 10-13°C and minimal precipitation. Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) represent comfortable transitional periods with moderate temperatures and predominantly dry weather, making them an attractive time to visit Rawalpindi.

Temperature

The climate in Rawalpindi features significant seasonal temperature fluctuations, which is important to consider when planning a trip. The hottest month of the year is June, when the average air temperature reaches 30.3°C, and maximum daytime values can rise to 36.6°C. May, July, August, and September are also characterized by high temperatures. In contrast, the coldest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 10.2°C and minimum night-time temperatures dropping to 4.5°C. December and February are also cool, with average figures of 11.7°C and 13.1°C respectively.

The summer period in Rawalpindi, spanning the months from May to September, brings hot weather. Daytime highs during this time often exceed 30°C, and in June can reach nearly 37°C. Night-time temperatures in summer also remain high, rarely dropping below 20°C, especially from June to August (minimum average night temperatures are 23.9°C in June, 25.1°C in July, 24.5°C in August). It is worth noting that in July (22 rainy days) and August (19 rainy days), the heat may feel more intense due to increased humidity associated with monsoon rains. Daily temperature fluctuations in summer are also pronounced, especially in May and June, when the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is about 13-14°C.

Winter in Rawalpindi, from December to February, offers relatively mild but cool weather. Maximum daytime temperatures in January are around 15.8°C, and in February rise to 19.2°C, making the daytime quite comfortable for walks. However, nights can be cold, with temperatures dropping to 4.5°C in January and 7.0°C in February. In transitional months, such as March, April, October, and November, a gradual change in temperatures occurs. For example, in October, the average temperature is a comfortable 22.7°C, yet a significant difference remains between daytime (29.4°C) and night-time (16.0°C) figures, which is a characteristic feature of this region's climate.

Precipitation

The city of Rawalpindi observes fairly clearly defined precipitation seasons. The year can be roughly divided into a wetter summer period and a relatively dry remainder of the year. The main peak of precipitation falls on the monsoon months, bringing a significant amount of moisture.

The wettest months in Rawalpindi are July and August. In July, an average of 6 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains quite often – about 22 days per month. August is also characterized by increased humidity: an average of 5 mm of precipitation and approximately 19 rainy days. During these months, rainfall can be intense, corresponding to the region's monsoon climate.

The dry season is most pronounced from October to December, as well as in June, when precipitation is minimal – about 1 mm per month. December is the driest month in terms of precipitation frequency, counting on average only 2 rainy days. In other months, such as January, February, March, April, May, and September, precipitation ranges from 2 to 4 mm, with the number of rainy days varying from 7 to 10. Given the temperature regime, precipitation in Rawalpindi falls predominantly in the form of rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Rawalpindi, it is important to consider significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The principle of layering clothing will be your best ally, allowing you to adapt to changing conditions. Regardless of the season, be sure to bring comfortable shoes for walking, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Given the cultural specifics of Pakistan, it is recommended to choose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious sites.

The summer months, especially from May to June, are very hot in Rawalpindi, with an average temperature of about 26-30°C and highs reaching 33-37°C. During this period, light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen is preferable. July and August bring the monsoon season with high humidity and frequent, though not always heavy, rainfall (up to 22 rainy days in July). At this time, a light raincoat or umbrella will come in handy, as well as quick-drying clothes. September can also be rainy, though to a lesser extent, so light rain protection will not be amiss.

From November to February, cooler weather settles in Rawalpindi, with average temperatures of 10-16°C, and night-time minimums can drop to 4-7°C. For this period, you will need warm items: sweaters, fleece jackets, a coat, and possibly a light hat and gloves for the evening and morning hours. March, April, October, and November are transitional months with comfortable temperatures (averaging 17-23°C). At this time, layered clothing is ideal: t-shirts, light jumpers, and a windbreaker that can be taken off or put on depending on the weather. A small amount of precipitation is possible in these months too, so a compact umbrella may be useful.
