Today, it is a unique historical site where nature meets 19th-century heritage, making Portugal even more attractive to travelers.

Visitors come here for silence, inspiration, and panoramic shots. The tower serves as a reminder of the park's brilliant past, remaining a popular point of interest for both tourists and locals seeking solitude in one of the city's most beautiful parks.

History & Facts

The gardens where the tower stands were designed in the 19th century as a setting for the grand Crystal Palace (Palácio de Cristal). This magnificent structure of glass and iron was erected in 1865 by British architects Thomas Dillen Jones and Francis Webb Shields. They drew inspiration from London's famous Crystal Palace.

In September 1865, the building was ceremoniously opened by King Luís I. It became the centerpiece of the Porto International Exhibition, which drew thousands of participants from around the world. In 1934, it also hosted the large-scale Portuguese Colonial Exhibition, cementing the site's status as an important cultural hub.

Unfortunately, by the mid-20th century, the original palace had fallen into disrepair and was demolished in 1951 to make way for a sports pavilion for the Roller Hockey World Championship. However, thanks to active protests by local residents, the historic name "Jardins do Palácio de Cristal" was preserved, and the surviving elements of the complex, including the tower, became monuments to a bygone era.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the tower itself, take beautiful photographs, and stroll through the surrounding grounds, we recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to get acquainted with the main monuments and relax in the shade of the trees.

If you plan to attend cultural events at the neighboring pavilion or organize a full picnic in the gardens, it's better to budget about half a day for your visit. This location invites long contemplation of nature and the cityscape.

Working Hours

The Palace Garden Tower can be visited daily. According to current data, it is open to guests from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM (Monday to Sunday). This schedule provides the opportunity to enjoy the views both in bright daylight and in the romantic atmosphere of the evening city.

Despite the consistent schedule, it is recommended to check for updates on the official city portal before your trip, as opening hours may change depending on the season or special events held within the park grounds.
