Located at the crossroads of eras in the ancient city of Cáceres, the Helga de Alvear Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the most significant cultural projects modern Spain has seen. It is a place where a private passion for collecting has been transformed into a public asset, offering the public access to more than 3,000 works of art from the 21st century.
The museum's architectural complex is a work of art in itself. It harmoniously combines the 1910 modernist building "Casa Grande" with a minimalist new wing designed by the firm Tuñón Arquitectos. Across four floors of exhibition space totaling 5,000 m², masterpieces by world-renowned figures such as Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Ai Weiwei, and Olafur Eliasson are displayed.
The museum is designed not just as a storehouse for paintings and sculptures, but as a living platform for experimentation and dialogue. Here, contemporary art speaks to the viewer about the issues of our time, encouraging a fresh look at familiar things. For visitors to the city, it is an essential stop, showing how the bold avant-garde coexists with the austere majesty of the UNESCO-listed historic center.
