General Weather Overview

The island of Vieques is characterized by a warm tropical climate that delights travellers with enviable stability throughout the year. Thanks to its location in the Caribbean Basin, there are practically no sharp temperature fluctuations or cold spells here. Thermometer readings comfortably stay within the range of +24°C to +27°C, making the island an excellent destination for a beach holiday regardless of the calendar.

There are no clearly defined seasons on Vieques, although slight differences between periods can be distinguished. The winter months and early spring bring slightly fresher weather, ideal for long walks, while summer and early autumn become the warmest periods of the year. Although statistics show a large number of days with precipitation, the rains here often have a short-term tropical character and are quickly replaced by bright sunshine.

Travellers should expect high humidity and very consistent temperatures. The warmest period falls in August and September, when the average temperature reaches its maximum and the probability of precipitation increases slightly. Overall, the weather in this part of Puerto Rico is predictable and hospitable, allowing you to enjoy nature and the sea all year round.

Temperature

The climate on the island of Vieques is distinguished by amazing stability and comfortable warmth throughout the year. There are practically no sharp seasonal contrasts here: the average annual temperature varies smoothly within a very narrow range. The "coolest" months are considered to be January and February with average figures of around 24.3°C — 24.7°C, while the peak heat occurs in August and September, when the air warms up to an average of 27.3°C.

The summer season and early autumn bring pleasant heat to the island, ideal for a beach holiday. During this period, maximum daytime temperatures reach 28°C — 29°C. Winter here feels exceptionally mild and resembles a balmy shoulder season: even on the coldest nights of February, the temperature rarely drops below 23°C, allowing tourists to forget about warm clothes and enjoy an eternal summer.

A characteristic feature of the temperature regime in Vieques is the minimal difference between day and night readings. The difference between the daily maximum and minimum is often only 2–3 degrees. This creates unique conditions where evenings and nights remain as warm and cosy as the days, allowing you to comfortably spend time outdoors around the clock.

Precipitation

The climate in Vieques is characterized by regular rainfall throughout the year, so there is no clearly defined dry season here. Nevertheless, the period from December to March can be called relatively calmer: at this time, the average rainfall level is a minimum of 2 mm per month, and the number of days with precipitation varies from 19 to 23, which is slightly less than during the rest of the year.

Increased humidity is observed in the summer and autumn months. The "wettest" month by volume of precipitation is September (about 7 mm), while July leads in rain frequency, with up to 28 rainy days recorded. At this time of year, short-term tropical downpours become a common occurrence, often arriving in the afternoon.

Since the island is located in the tropical zone, there is no snow here, and precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain. Despite the high frequency of precipitation (about 20 days or more monthly), rains often take the form of quick, heavy downpours. They are instantly replaced by bright sunshine, so they rarely become a serious hindrance to a full holiday.

What to Pack

Since the climate on the island of Vieques remains warm and tropical throughout the year with an average temperature of about 25–27°C, the basis of your luggage should be light items made of natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen. Be sure to take enough beachwear, shorts, and T-shirts, as the heat is felt here even in the winter months. For comfortable walks around the island and exploring the natural attractions of Puerto Rico, you will need comfortable, broken-in shoes, and for a beach holiday — light sandals or flip-flops.

Despite the fact that the air temperature is stable, statistics show a large number of days with precipitation in every month (about 20–28 days), which is typical for the tropics. Rains here are often short-lived but sudden, so a compact folding umbrella or a light rain poncho will become indispensable companions. It is also critically important to take care of sun protection: be sure to pack sunscreen with a high SPF factor, a wide-brimmed hat, and quality sunglasses.

Evenings on Vieques are warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below 23°C, however, a light long-sleeved top or windbreaker may come in handy. They will protect not only from the sea breeze or the cool air conditioning in rooms but also from insects, which is especially relevant if you are planning an evening excursion to the famous Bioluminescent Bay. The principle of layering is rarely used here due to the lack of cold weather, but having a change of dry clothes is always a plus in conditions of high humidity.
