The Botanical Garden owes its creation and development to Professor Ivan Sergeyevich Kosenko, a Doctor of Agricultural Sciences and Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, after whom it is named. Although many city residents simply call this place the "arboretum," its official status is a Botanical Garden. This emphasizes its scientific significance and its role in the conservation and study of the plant world.

The Arboretum is a true treasure trove of flora, housing a unique collection of plants from various climatic zones. Thanks to its rich biodiversity and careful maintenance, the garden was officially recognized as a monument of nature and landscape art in 1988. A visit to the Arboretum is a wonderful opportunity to see rare species of trees and shrubs, enjoy picturesque alleys, and simply spend a pleasant time in the fresh air.

History & Facts

The history of the Krasnodar Arboretum, also known as the I.S. Kosenko Botanical Garden, dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Remarkably, the first idea of founding a botanical garden in Krasnodar arose back in 1914. The then-governor of the Kuban region, Lieutenant General Mikhail Babich, even sent inquiries to Tiflis, which housed the largest botanical garden in Russia at the time. However, these ambitious plans were not destined to come true due to a series of dramatic historical events: the First World War, the subsequent Civil War, and the Great Patriotic War, which postponed the realization of this beautiful idea for a long time.

The dream of a green oasis in Krasnodar only came to life decades later. The actual creation of the arboretum began only in 1957, when a significant plot of land measuring 73 hectares was allocated on the western outskirts of the city. This site was intended for the creation of an arboretum under the Kuban Agricultural Institute, which became its "cradle." Thus, the city waited a full 43 years from the initial proposal for its botanical garden to appear, highlighting how long-awaited this event was for the people of Krasnodar.

A significant milestone in the garden's history was naming it after the man who poured his soul and knowledge into its creation. In 1977, by decision of the Krasnodar Regional Executive Committee, the arboretum was named in honor of its founder and first director — Professor Ivan Sergeyevich Kosenko. The diligent work in creating and developing this unique plant collection did not go unnoticed: the Botanical Garden was repeatedly featured at the prestigious Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy (VDNKh) in Moscow in 1966, 1969, and 1971. For their outstanding contribution to the arboretum's creation, Professor I.S. Kosenko and his associate I.A. Umantseva were awarded gold medals from VDNKh, a high recognition of their labor.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to the Krasnodar Arboretum, also known as the I.S. Kosenko Botanical Garden, it is worth allowing 2-3 hours. This is generally enough time for a full stroll and to get acquainted with the park's main highlights. During this period, you can leisurely walk through the picturesque alleys, admire various plant collections, observe local inhabitants like squirrels and peacocks, and, of course, take beautiful souvenir photos.

If you are a big botany enthusiast and want to study the species of trees and shrubs presented in the Arboretum in more detail, you might need a bit more time. For a deep dive into the world of flora and to study rare specimens, you could easily set aside half a day. In any case, visiting this green corner of Krasnodar will give you many pleasant impressions and allow you to rest from the city's hustle and bustle.
