Created by the talented sculptor Peter Sceranka, this technological masterpiece operates on the principle of perfect synchronization of water jets with multicolored lighting. Every movement of the water here follows the rhythm of the melodies played, turning a simple stroll through Slovakia into an unforgettable audiovisual show.

A special significance is given to the object by a musical instrument — a carillon consisting of 22 bells. Each of them symbolizes one of the city's districts, turning this engineering structure into a living embodiment of city history and unity. After a recent major renovation, the fountain has found a second life, becoming even more vibrant and modern.

What to Do

The main reason to visit is the musical performances. Every hour, the fountain "comes alive," performing classical and contemporary compositions accompanied by the dance of water jets. To get the most out of your experience, it is best to plan your visit for the evening, when the light effects become most expressive and create a truly magical atmosphere.

Comfortable benches are installed around the fountain basin, where you can settle in comfortably to watch the play of water. This spot is perfect for a short break during sightseeing: it is pleasant to enjoy an ice cream or a cup of coffee while savoring the cooling mist on a hot day.

The fountain is surrounded by a magnificent architectural ensemble. Nearby are the State Theatre Kosice and the majestic St. Elisabeth's Cathedral, so a visit to the fountain can easily be combined with a cultural program. For families with children, it is also a popular spot for relaxation: little ones love watching the pigeons and traditionally tossing coins into the water to ensure they return here again.

Getting There

Finding this famous landmark is quite easy, as it is located in the heart of the historic center at Hlavná 51. This is a pedestrian zone, so the best way to get there is a walk along the picturesque Hlavná Street. Along the way, you can enjoy the architecture of the old town and the atmosphere of cozy cafes.

If you are in a remote area, you can use public transport (buses or trams) that go to stops in the city center, such as "Námestie osloboditeľov" or "Radnica Starého mesta." From there, it is only a few minutes' walk to the fountain.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi is always available. Drivers will take you to the edge of the pedestrian zone, from where the attraction is just a stone's throw away. Landmarks for navigation include the State Theatre building or St. Elisabeth's Cathedral, between which the destination is located.

History & Facts

The history of this iconic site began in 1986. The appearance of the musical fountain was a major event for the city, transforming a simple square into a high-tech center of attraction. The project was designed by the famous Kosice sculptor Peter Sceranka, who managed to harmoniously combine art and engineering.

At the time of its opening, the fountain was considered an innovative achievement, as it was the first place in the former Czechoslovakia to implement a complex system of synchronization between water cascades, light, and sound. This made it a unique monument of its era, ahead of its time in technical execution.

Over decades of service, the structure suffered wear and tear, and between 2024 and 2025, the most extensive repair in the object's 38-year history was carried out. The large-scale renovation allowed for a complete overhaul of the internal mechanisms and electronics, ensuring the fountain will delight spectators for many years to come.

An interesting detail is the 22-bell carillon. Each bell carries a special meaning, symbolizing one of the 22 administrative districts into which the city is divided. Thus, the fountain is not just a decoration, but a true symbol of unity for all residents.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the spectacle, it is recommended to set aside 30 to 60 minutes. This time is quite enough to wait for the next musical session, which traditionally starts every hour, and to watch the full performance program.

If you plan to combine your rest by the water with a tour of neighboring architectural monuments or a cup of coffee at a nearby cafe, your stay here may extend to an hour and a half or two hours. There is no need to rush — the steady sound of water and the melodic tones of the carillon encourage a contemplative and leisurely experience.

Working Hours

The fountain delights residents and visitors daily throughout the warm season. The schedule is consistent: you can enjoy the music and water show from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Sunday.

Musical programs run every hour, so you won't have to wait long for a performance. Please note that the schedule may change slightly depending on the season and weather conditions, and evening light shows usually begin at dusk for maximum effect.
