Once a simple gym, today the former Grabenturnhalle has transformed into a space for self-expression. There is no strict dress code or pretentiousness here, but there is always an abundance of live energy. The place is famous for its low barrier to entry and openness to a wide variety of audiences—from hard rock fans to connoisseurs of intellectual discussions.

What to Do

There is always something interesting happening at Grabenhalle, whether it's a loud concert or an intimate evening. Fans of live music can catch performances by bands of various genres: from punk and reggae to heavy metal and underground rock. Historically, the stage has seen both genre legends and promising newcomers, so every evening here is a chance for a musical discovery.

Beyond music, the space offers a rich program of cultural events: theater productions, quizzes, panel discussions, and dance parties are held here regularly. One of the highlights of the venue is its professional lighting system, created by a talented art group, which turns every show into a full-fledged visual performance.

If you want to relax in a laid-back setting, stop by the cozy Hallenbeiz bar. The club’s foyer has a friendly atmosphere where you can have a drink and chat with like-minded people. Don't forget to check out the building's facade—the walls, covered in posters, are a reflection of the city's current cultural agenda.

Getting There

Located at Unterer Graben 17, the venue is right on the edge of the Old Town, making it easily accessible for tourists. If you are already walking through the center, the walk from the main square will take only about 5–10 minutes. From the city's main railway station, you can reach it on foot in 15–20 minutes or take a local bus for a couple of stops.

For those coming from other regions, taking the train is the most convenient option. The journey from Zurich Airport to the St. Gallen station takes about one hour. When using a private car, keep in mind that parking in this area is very limited due to its proximity to pedestrian zones. It is much more convenient to take a taxi from the center or opt for a bicycle, for which there are spaces provided nearby.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in the 1980s with a struggle to preserve the city's heritage. The former gym building, Grabenturnhalle, was planned for demolition to make way for a parking lot. However, a group of enthusiasts and activists collected over a thousand signatures and organized a campaign to protect the space, wanting to turn it into a home for alternative art.

The official opening as a cultural center took place on May 5, 1984, after the city authorities approved a three-year trial period. Since then, Grabenhalle has undergone several stages of modernization: the audio system was updated and a cloakroom was added in the 1990s, and in 2003, the facade and bar area were expanded, making the space more modern and comfortable.

In 2024, the center celebrated its 40th anniversary, confirming its status as a cult venue. Over the decades, the venue has evolved from "chaotic" parties to professionally organized festivals, while maintaining its unique atmosphere of freedom and independence, for which it is so highly valued by residents and visitors alike.

Time Needed

The time needed for a visit directly depends on the event format. If you plan to attend a live concert, you should set aside 3 to 5 hours in your schedule. This will allow you not only to enjoy the music but also to spend some time at the bar, chat with locals, and soak in the venue's informal atmosphere.

For participating in intellectual quizzes, themed discussions, or dance nights, 2–3 hours is usually enough. In any case, this space does not tolerate rushing, so it is best to come in the evening when life at the club starts to bustle.

Working Hours

The venue's working hours depend entirely on the schedule of the events being held. As a rule, the doors open to visitors in the evening. Concerts and parties usually start around 8:00 PM, and on Fridays and Saturdays, the fun can continue until 2:00 AM or even later.

Since there are no fixed daily opening hours, we strongly recommend checking the official website of Grabenhalle before visiting. The exact start times for events and information on ticket sales are always posted there.
