What to Do

The main highlight of your visit will be a tour of the interior halls, where time seems to have stood still. You will see authentic interiors with original furniture used by the castle's last owners. It creates an amazing feeling as if the owners had only left the rooms for a minute, leaving their personal belongings and decorative items in their usual places.

In addition to exploring the museum exhibitions, it is definitely worth taking a walk through the adjacent English park. Its winding paths and centuries-old trees create ideal conditions for a peaceful break. The castle's terraces offer breathtaking views of the lake, which will serve as an excellent backdrop for inspiring photos.

For architecture enthusiasts, the castle is an interesting object for detailed study: you can spend hours admiring the stucco, carved wooden elements, and elegant turrets. It is an ideal place for those seeking aesthetic pleasure and wanting to experience the culture of the Swiss nobility in a quiet, almost intimate setting.

Getting There

Getting to this attraction is easy, as it is located just a few kilometers from the Thun central station. The most picturesque way is to take the regular bus route that runs along the lakeshore. The public transport stop is within walking distance of the manor's main gates.

If you prefer to travel by car, follow the Staatsstrasse embankment. Parking spaces are available at the castle, although they may be occupied during peak tourist season. Another popular and very pleasant way to get around in this region is by water transport — small vessels regularly cruise the lake, allowing you to enjoy a view of the castle from the water.

For those who value comfort, a taxi is always available from the train station or the city's central squares. The ride will take no more than 10–15 minutes, opening the doors to the world of 19th-century Swiss aristocracy.

History & Facts

The history of the construction of this magnificent structure began at the request of Prussian Baron Albert Otto von Parpart-Bonstetten. In the mid-19th century, he decided to create a family seat that would reflect the grandeur of European traditions. Curiously, the project was completed in a remarkably short time, despite the complexity and detail of the architecture.

When designing the building, a young 26-year-old architect from Berlin drew inspiration from the famous castles of the French Loire. The building's appearance clearly shows features of masterpieces such as Blois and Azay-le-Rideau. The architect managed to harmoniously combine the opulence of the French Renaissance with the practicality and comfort typical of the Swiss lands of that time.

For decades, the castle belonged to noble families who carefully preserved its appearance. Thanks to the fact that the interiors did not undergo significant redevelopment, today we can see the authentic setting, furniture, and household items that belonged to its last owners. This makes Hünegg not just an architectural monument, but a living time capsule.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the museum's interior halls and enjoy a walk through the surrounding grounds, it is recommended to set aside about 2–3 hours. This time is quite sufficient to study the exposition, look at the interior details, and take memorable photos against the backdrop of the lake scenery.

If you also plan to visit the park or stop by the local cafe, it's worth allowing a bit more time for the visit — about half a day. The atmosphere of this place encourages contemplation, so you definitely won't want to rush during your tour.

Working Hours

Currently, according to the latest information, visiting the castle may be limited as the site has a CLOSED_TEMPORARILY status. This may be due to seasonal work or planned restoration of the premises.

To ensure a successful trip, we strongly recommend checking the current schedule on the official website before you leave. Typically, the castle opens its doors to tourists during the warmer months, offering special hours for tour groups.
