About

The mosque is a classic example of a religious building from the empire's golden age in Turkey. It was built in 1608 at the initiative of Zahreci Ali Ağa, one of the commanders of the Janissary corps. The building stands out for its compactness and harmonious proportions: a massive dome on a high drum rises above the main square hall.

A distinctive feature of the structure is its appearance, combining different types of stone — from a dark reddish hue on the corners to rubble stone on the side walls. This historical site is not only a place of prayer but also a living testimony to the region's rich past, having survived earthquakes and been carefully restored in modern times.

What to Do

A visit to the mosque is, first and foremost, an opportunity to connect with the region's Ottoman heritage. Visitors should take note of the facade, decorated with a pointed arch featuring a historical inscription above the entrance. Be sure to see the open gallery (son cemaat) with its three small domes hidden under a common conical roof, which gives the building a unique silhouette.

Inside the prayer hall, you can appreciate the austere yet majestic decor: a central dome on pendentives, a traditional mihrab niche in the qibla wall, and a wooden minbar. Outside, it's worth walking around the building to see the unusual masonry of the minaret, where a square stone base transitions smoothly into a cylindrical brick shaft.

After exploring the mosque, we recommend taking a stroll through the Gürcü Kapı neighborhood. This area has a rich commercial history, once described by the famous traveler Evliya Çelebi. The mosque remains active, so you can feel the city's living atmosphere here, watching the passage of time in the quiet courtyard while observing the rules for visiting religious sites.

Getting There

Finding the mosque is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the Yakutiye district. If your hotel is in the historic part of Erzurum, you can easily reach the site on foot. The landmark is Gürcükapı Caddesi, from which it's just a couple of minutes' walk to the mosque building.

For trips from more distant areas, it's most convenient to use a taxi or local buses going to stops in Yakutiye. If you are arriving from the airport, you can take the HAVAŞ shuttle to the center and then a short walk to Cami Sk.

The attraction is within walking distance of other iconic sites, making it a convenient point on a tourist route. Parking spaces are available nearby, although in peak season traffic on the narrow streets can be difficult, so walking remains the preferred option.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1608 when the foundation of the future mosque was laid by order of Zahreci Ali Ağa, who commanded the Janissaries in the city of Erzurum. At that time, the Gürcü Kapı district was a flourishing commercial hub where the paths of merchants and representatives of diverse cultures crossed.

A major test for the building was the devastating earthquake of 1859. The building was damaged but was soon fully restored. To commemorate these works, a small inscription was placed above the entrance, which attentive tourists can see today. The modest yet noble appearance of the mosque has preserved the features of the classic Turkish style of the early 17th century.

In 2006, the mosque underwent a comprehensive scientific restoration. Experts reinforced the structure and restored the masonry, preserving the original appearance of the brick minaret and stone base. The name of the site still serves as a reminder of the "Georgian Gate" that once stood in this part of the city's fortifications, highlighting the neighborhood's importance in the city's defense and trade.

Time Needed

You won't need much time to explore this religious landmark of eastern Turkey. Touring the interior and studying the architectural features of the facade usually takes about 30–45 minutes.

This is quite enough time to take beautiful photos of the brick minaret against the sky, examine the commemorative inscriptions above the doorways, and simply enjoy the silence in the courtyard before continuing your walk through the historic quarter.
