The gardens cover an impressive area of about two acres and are divided into twelve themed greenhouses. They house one of the most significant collections in the United Kingdom, including giant cacti, rare bromeliads, and lush tree ferns. Walking along the winding paths, visitors travel from the arid deserts of Central America to the humid tropical forests of the Amazon.

This complex is not just a botanical garden but a true point of cultural pride for Scotland. Thanks to its combination of unique flora, Victorian elegance, and modern educational zones, it consistently ranks among the top three most visited gardens in the region. Entry to this realm of nature remains free, making it an accessible and beloved leisure spot for both locals and tourists alike.

What to Do

There is no room for boredom at the David Welch Winter Gardens: an exciting journey through different climatic zones awaits you. Start with the Arid House, home to bizarre succulents and the world's only "talking cactus," which children especially enjoy. Then, head to the Tropical House to see real cocoa trees growing and observe fascinating carnivorous plants.

Fans of vintage aesthetics should visit the Victorian Corridor, which recreates the atmosphere of 19th-century flower shows with their vibrant colors and symmetrical flowerbeds. Don't forget to visit the Fern House and walk through the "Perfume Corridor," where the air is filled with the fragrance of rare flowers. In the Japanese Garden, you can find solitude among bamboo thickets and cherry trees, while the educational room offers an introduction to the traditions of the tea ceremony.

Outside the greenhouses, Duthie Park offers equally interesting activities. During the warmer months, you can rent a rowing boat or kayak for a trip on the lake, admire the grand statues, or simply have a picnic on the well-kept lawns. For photography enthusiasts, this location provides an endless number of striking spots—from the tropical jungles inside the pavilions to the classic British landscapes outside.

Getting There

Getting to this green sanctuary is easy, as it is located in the southern part of the city in a picturesque area by the River Dee. If you prefer walking, the route from the city center takes about 30–40 minutes—a great opportunity to see the residential neighborhoods and architecture of the Ferryhill district.

For those choosing public transport, bus routes 1, 1A, 2, 3, 18, and 20 are ideal, stopping in the immediate vicinity of the Duthie Park entrance. If you are arriving at the Aberdeen railway station, a taxi ride will take no more than 10 minutes.

Travelers by car can take advantage of the free parking located at the main entrance. To get here from the center, follow Great Southern Road (A956) and turn onto Polmuir Road, following the signs for the park.

History & Facts

The history of this site began thanks to the generosity of Miss Elizabeth Crombie Duthie, who gifted the land to the city in 1881 in memory of her family. The Winter Gardens themselves, originally known as the Palm House, opened their doors in 1899. However, in 1969, a powerful storm hit the city, severely damaging the fragile mahogany structure, after which the complex was completely rebuilt and reopened in April 1970.

The facility received its current name in honor of David Welch, the distinguished director of city parks who transformed Aberdeen into a true "flower city" and won numerous awards at prestigious exhibitions, including gold medals at Chelsea. Inside the gardens, you can find fascinating artifacts: for example, the oak wheelbarrow used during the first planting in 1881, and antique provosts' lamps dating back to 1838.

The salvaged elements of city decor integrated into the garden landscape deserve special attention. You'll find the metal cats that once adorned Union Bridge and magnificent stained-glass windows saved from old city buildings. Even the Japanese Garden, opened in 1987 by the Japanese Ambassador, has its own story—it was created in memory of victims of past tragic events as a symbol of peace and tranquility.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through all twelve greenhouses and enjoy the details of each themed zone, most visitors need about 1–1.5 hours. If you plan to study the cactus collection in detail or photograph rare exotic flowers, time may fly by unnoticed.

We recommend allowing about 2–3 hours for the entire visit. This will allow you not only to explore the indoor gardens but also to stroll through Duthie Park itself, see the memorial statues, visit the Japanese Garden, and perhaps relax by the lake. It is an ideal option for a peaceful outing in the morning or afternoon.

Working Hours

The Winter Gardens warmly welcome guests year-round, providing a chance to warm up among tropical greenery even on the coldest days. The complex doors are open daily from 10:30 to 16:00, including weekends.

Please note that while the park grounds may be accessible for longer hours, the greenhouses themselves follow a strict schedule. Before your trip, it is recommended to check the official Aberdeen city website to ensure there are no changes to the schedule due to special events or maintenance work.
