General Weather Overview

The climate in Cortez can be characterised as temperate-continental and arid, with distinct seasons. The weather here is distinguished by significant temperature contrasts: from freezing winter nights to hot summer days. Thanks to low humidity and low precipitation, the climate is generally perceived as comfortable for travel, especially if you prefer clear weather.

Seasonality in the city is clearly defined. Winter here is cold, with temperatures often dropping below zero, especially in January and December. Summer, conversely, delights with warmth: in July and August, the air warms up on average to +30°C. Spring and autumn act as transitional periods where cool gives way to warmth and vice versa, while March stands out with slightly more cloudy days compared to the rest of the year.

A characteristic feature of the weather in Cortez is remarkable stability regarding precipitation: its level remains minimal throughout the year. Even in those months when statistics record a few "wet" days, rains are usually brief and insignificant. This makes the region an excellent choice for outdoor activity enthusiasts, as the likelihood of prolonged downpours disrupting plans is extremely low.

Temperature

The climate in Cortez features pronounced seasonality, offering travellers diverse weather conditions depending on the time of year. The coldest month is traditionally January, when the average temperature holds at -3.6°C. Winters here can be characterised as frosty, especially at night when the thermometer drops to -9.6°C. During the day, the air warms up weakly, reaching only small positive values in the range of 2-4°C, so warm clothing will be necessary from December to February.

Summer brings real warmth, peaking in July, which is considered the hottest month of the year with an average temperature of 23.4°C. During this period, daytime figures often exceed the 30°C mark, creating dry heat conditions ideally suited for lovers of sunny weather. June and August also delight with high temperatures, when the air warms up to 28-29°C during the day, ensuring comfortable conditions for outdoor recreation.

An important feature of the local temperature regime is significant daily fluctuations. Even at the height of the summer season, when it can be truly hot during the day, nights bring noticeable coolness: the temperature can drop sharply from a daytime 30°C to a nocturnal 16°C. In spring and autumn, this contrast is also noticeable, so tourists are recommended to have items with them that can be easily put on in the evening after sunset.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Cortez falls unevenly, and the general climate can be characterised as quite dry. The most noticeable period of increased humidity falls during the winter months and early spring. Due to low temperatures dropping below zero, from December to February precipitation often falls as snow. The "wettest" month in terms of inclement weather frequency is March, when an average of about 11 days with precipitation is recorded, whereas in winter months this number is 7–8 days.

The summer season and early autumn, on the contrary, are distinguished by more stable and dry weather. The driest month is considered June, when rains are likely only during 3 days. In April, May, and August, the number of rainy days is also small — about 4 per month. Even in the summer period, the volume of falling moisture remains minimal (about 1 mm per month), which indicates the brief and light nature of the rains.

What to Pack

For a trip to Cortez, it is important to approach your wardrobe choice wisely, as the weather here has pronounced seasonality. In winter and early spring, when the temperature often drops below zero (down to -9°C in January), you will definitely need a warm jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves. Considering that March can be the rainiest month of the year, it is worth taking waterproof shoes with you. The principle of layering will become your best friend: thermal underwear and fleece tops will help keep warmth on cold days and are easily removed if it becomes hot.

In summer, when the air warms up to a comfortable +28...+30°C, give preference to light clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. However, remember that even in July and August, evenings can be cool (around +15...+16°C), so a light windbreaker or sweater must be in your suitcase. Since solar activity in the summer months is high, be sure to grab sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation during walks.

For the shoulder seasons (April, May, September, October), casual clothing that is easy to combine is ideal. The most important thing for any tourist in the USA is comfortable shoes for walking, especially if you plan to actively explore the city and its surroundings. Despite the fact that the precipitation level is generally low, a compact umbrella or raincoat won't take up much space but will help you out on cloudy days, which happen year-round.
