Originally designed by the renowned architectural firm Welton Becket & Associates, the complex has undergone an impressive evolution from a 1960s outdoor shopping center to a modern retail park. Today, Gateway Plaza covers an area of approximately 195,000 square feet, offering guests a comfortable environment for daily errands and leisure.

One of the unique features of this location is its historical connection to the BART transportation system. Gateway Plaza was one of the first suburban malls accessible via rapid transit trains, highlighting its status as an important transport and commercial hub. Thanks to its high rating among locals, it remains a popular destination for anyone who appreciates quality services and convenience.

What to Do

A visit to Gateway Plaza is a wonderful opportunity to combine daily errands with a pleasant pastime. Here, you can enjoy a full shopping tour, stopping by major supermarkets for fresh produce or visiting specialized clothing and home goods stores. The variety of tenants allows you to find everything you need in one place, without wasting extra time traveling around the city.

In addition to shopping, visitors often come here to meet up with friends or spend time with family. The convenient infrastructure and cozy rest areas make the center an ideal spot for a break in the middle of a workday. Although the old cinemas that were once located here have become part of history, the modern Gateway Plaza retains the atmosphere of a bustling urban space.

Due to the high concentration of well-known brands and its convenient location near major transport routes, this place is perfect for those who value comfort. Here, you can not only update your wardrobe but also enjoy a walk through the well-maintained grounds, observing the rhythm of life in one of Fremont's most dynamic districts.

Getting There

Getting to Gateway Plaza is easy for both locals and tourists. The property is located at 39200 Paseo Padre Pkwy, just a few minutes' drive from the city's central blocks. If you are traveling by car, there is ample parking directly on-site, with convenient access from Paseo Padre Parkway.

For those who prefer public transport, the BART rapid transit system (MacArthur-Fremont line) is an excellent option. The center is located in close proximity to the station, making it easily accessible for residents of the entire San Francisco Bay Area. In fact, it was one of the first shopping hubs in the region to be integrated into the rail transport system.

If you are coming from San Francisco, the drive southeast takes about 45-60 minutes (a distance of approximately 28 miles). You can also always use taxi or ride-sharing services—a trip from the popular Fremont Hub landmark takes less than five minutes, as the distance is only about 800 meters.

History & Facts

The history of this location began in the mid-1960s. In July 1965, the planning commission approved a zoning change for the land from agricultural to commercial, marking the start of large-scale construction. Originally known as the Fremont Plaza Center, it was envisioned as a vital economic hub for the growing suburb.

A landmark event was the opening in February 1968 of the three-story Capwell's department store, which became the main anchor of the shopping site. It was soon joined by other prominent brands of the era, such as Roos-Atkins and Safeway. In the 1970s, Gateway Plaza also became a cultural center for the area following the opening of the Showcase Cinemas.

The center underwent a major transformation in 1993: the central portion was demolished and rebuilt, after which it was renamed the Fremont Gateway Center. During this reconstruction, the popular Raley's supermarket established a presence here. In 2001, the property was acquired by Weingarten Realty, and in 2021, following a merger with Kimco Realty, the complex finally solidified its status as the modern and sought-after Gateway Plaza.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Gateway Plaza, you should base it on your personal goals. If your task is to quickly stop by a couple of specific stores or buy groceries, then 1–2 hours will be quite enough to browse the selection and make all necessary purchases.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, including lunch at one of the local restaurants or a thorough look at the offers from various retailers, it is better to set aside about 2–3 hours. The compact nature of the center means you won't spend much time moving between shops, but the variety of goods available might keep you engaged longer than initially planned.

Working Hours

The Gateway Plaza shopping center operates on a very convenient schedule, allowing for shopping from early morning until late evening. The complex is open to visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, including weekends and holidays.

It is important to note that the operating hours of individual stores, cafes, or service centers within the mall may differ from the general schedule of the complex itself. It is recommended to check the hours of the specific brand you are interested in before your visit.
