The Blennerhassett Hotel

About

The Blennerhassett Hotel is more than just a place to stay; it is a living monument to history in the heart of Parkersburg. Built in 1889 in the exquisite Queen Anne style, it became a symbol of luxury and prosperity in the USA during the oil and gas boom. The building's architectural silhouette is striking: its textured facade and Romanesque Revival elements make it one of the state's most recognizable landmarks.

Founded by former mayor William Nelson Chancellor, the hotel initially offered guests a level of comfort unprecedented for the late 19th century. Interestingly, the space occupied by the modern coffee shop and library once housed the First National Bank, which became one of the first electrified buildings in the city. Today, the hotel maintains this continuity, offering guests world-class service.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this property harmoniously combines the spirit of the Victorian era with modern amenities. Following extensive restorations, guests have access to luxurious European-style rooms, a cozy climate-controlled courtyard, and an atmosphere of genuine aristocracy that cannot be found in chain hotels.

History & Facts

The history of this grand building began in 1883 under the direction of Colonel William Nelson Chancellor. Construction lasted six years and became the realization of a dream to create the most luxurious establishment in West Virginia. The hotel was named after Harman Blennerhassett, a historical figure and founder of the nearby island of the same name.

When the hotel opened its doors on May 6, 1889, it amazed the public with the presence of electricity, gas lighting, and steam heating. At the time, such technologies were rare even for large cities in the USA. The building quickly became the center of social life for wealthy industrialists of the oil and gas boom era.

However, the 20th century brought its challenges: by the 1970s, the property had fallen into decline, and in 1979, it was seriously damaged by a fire. The revival began in 1980 when local investors and residents of Parkersburg invested millions of dollars in a massive restoration. Thanks to these efforts and subsequent updates in the 2000s, the authentic charm was preserved, and the hotel was returned to its former glory.

Time Needed

For a brief introduction to the interiors, a tour of the lobby, and a look at the famous antique clock, you will need about 1–2 hours. This is plenty of time to feel the historical atmosphere and take commemorative photos of the Victorian architectural details.

If you plan to visit the local restaurant or spend time in the library with a book and a cup of coffee, it is worth setting aside half a day for your visit. Of course, for full immersion in the era of gas lighting, it is best to stay overnight to fully enjoy the hospitality of this unique place.

Working Hours

As befits a first-class establishment, The Blennerhassett Hotel is open to guests 24/7. The registration desk operates 24 hours a day, ensuring a warm welcome at any time of day or night.

Please note that the restaurant, bar, and coffee shop may have their own schedules, which depend on the day of the week. Before your visit, it is recommended to check the current operating hours of these establishments on-site or on the hotel's official website.
