Kaložski Park

About

On the picturesque right bank of the Neman, in the heart of ancient Grodno, lies Kalozha Park—one of the most peaceful and historically significant places in Belarus. This green expanse occupies the territory of the ancient Kaložan tract, which for centuries served as the spiritual and defensive center of the city. The park harmoniously combines the structured layout of its central avenues with the natural beauty of the riverside landscape.

The main architectural landmark of the park is the famous 12th-century St. Boris and Gleb Church, whose ancient silhouette rises above the river. More than 20 species of trees are planted on the grounds, including oaks, chestnuts, spruces, and rare types of ash, making the air here especially fresh. One of the park's unique features is the Grodno Open-Air Museum of Stone Sculptures, where works by modern masters are seamlessly integrated into the natural environment.

Strolling through the park, visitors can see the commemorative stele for the 850th anniversary of the city and themed walkways, such as the "Victory Lilac" or the "Avenue of the Friendship of Nations." This is a place of attraction for both history buffs and those looking for a relaxing break surrounded by nature while enjoying panoramic views of the Neman and the historic part of the city.

History & Facts

The history of the modern park began in the 1960s, when a green zone was established on the site of the historic Kaložan tract to mark the 40th anniversary of the Komsomol of Belarus. During the Soviet period, there were plans to create a large-scale cultural and sports center with an arena and rides; however, only part of the plan was realized—the Palace of Creativity for Children and Youth and a football school.

The main historical treasure of the area is the St. Boris and Gleb (Kalozha) Church, built in the second half of the 12th century. It is a unique monument of the distinctive Grodno architectural school. A dramatic page in the site's history occurred in 1853: due to the erosion of the bank by the Neman River, a landslide caused the southern wall of the church to collapse. Later, the lost fragments were replaced with wooden structures, creating the unique appearance of the building that we see today.

In 1978, the park's landscape was enhanced by a majestic commemorative stele for the 850th anniversary of the city, depicting the figures of a warrior and a woman—symbols of courage and hospitality. In the early 2010s, a new tradition began in the park: the opening of an open-air museum of stone sculptures, the first of which was the composition "Song of Kalozha".

Today, the park and the adjacent church are candidates for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The combination of ancient masonry, Soviet monumentalism, and modern art objects makes this place a living textbook of the history of the city on the Neman.

Time Needed

A full visit to the park territory usually takes from 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to take a leisurely stroll along the avenues, examine the unusual stone sculptures, and take commemorative photos by the stele and against the backdrop of the river.

If you plan to combine your walk with a detailed inspection of the architecture of the ancient St. Boris and Gleb Church or want to have a small picnic on the banks of the Neman, we recommend setting aside 2–3 hours for your visit. The park is also perfect for an extended stay in the fresh air if your trip is not limited by a strict schedule.

Working Hours

Kalozha Park is a public urban space and is open to visitors 24/7. This allows guests to plan their walks at any convenient time—whether it's early morning for exercise or late evening for watching sunsets over the Neman.

According to the official schedule, the park is open 24 hours a day throughout the week:
