Current Weather
Overview
The climate in Banff, located in the Canadian Rockies, is characterized as subarctic or alpine, with long, cold winters and short, mild summers. There are four distinct seasons, each offering unique landscapes and recreational opportunities.
Winters in Banff are long and frosty, with average temperatures from December to February hovering around -13°C to -14°C, often dropping even lower. This period is ideal for winter sports. Summers, by contrast, are short and pleasant. July and August are the warmest months, with average temperatures around +12°C, although daily highs can reach +18°C. This is a wonderful time for hiking and enjoying nature.
Spring (May) and autumn (September-October) are shoulder seasons with variable weather. In May, average temperatures rise above freezing, while in September, it starts to get noticeably colder. Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, but June sees the highest number of rainy days, which is worth considering when planning outdoor activities.
Temperature
The annual temperature range in Banff is quite significant, typical of its high-altitude location in the Canadian Rockies. The coldest months are February and December, with average monthly temperatures hovering at -13.9°C. During these months, nighttime lows can be particularly harsh, reaching -18.1°C in February and -17.2°C in December. January is not far behind in terms of cold, with an average temperature of -12.9°C. In contrast, the warmest month of the year is July, when the average temperature rises to a comfortable +12.2°C, and daily highs can reach a pleasant +18.5°C. August is also very warm, with an average temperature of +11.8°C and daily maximums up to +18.1°C.
The summer period in Banff, covering June, July, and August, offers a pleasant coolness ideal for exploring the national park. In July and August, daytime temperatures on average fluctuate in the +18°C range, creating excellent conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. However, evenings and nights can be quite chilly: air temperatures after sunset can drop to +5.4°C in August and +5.9°C in July. This means that even in the warmest months, it's worth having warm clothes with you. In June, leading up to the peak of summer, the average temperature is +7.4°C, with daytime highs around +13.0°C and nighttime lows around +1.7°C, indicating notable diurnal fluctuations.
Winter months in Banff, from December to February, are characterized by consistently frosty weather. Daytime temperatures during this period rarely rise above -9°C, and average maximum values range from -9.4°C in January to -10.7°C in December. Nighttime temperatures regularly drop significantly lower, often to -16°C or -18°C. The shoulder seasons also show distinct characteristics: in spring, March (-8.2°C) and April (-3.7°C) see a gradual warming, but nighttime frosts are still frequent. In autumn, specifically October, the average temperature already drops to -2.0°C, and in November, it reaches -9.4°C, signaling the arrival of winter. Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are less pronounced than in summer but still amount to a noticeable 6-9°C.

Precipitation
Precipitation in Banff occurs throughout the year, but the total amount is relatively low. There is no distinct rainy season with heavy downpours; rather, there are frequent but light showers. The nature of this precipitation changes with the season: in cold winters, it is predominantly snow, while in warmer months, it's rain. The highest amount of precipitation, both in volume and frequency, is usually observed in early summer.
Winter months, roughly from November to April, are characterized by regular snowfall. Although January is the driest month in terms of total precipitation (only about 1 mm), it still averages 9 days of snow. The number of days with precipitation (mostly snow) gradually increases from February (about 11 days, 2 mm) to April (about 14 days, 2 mm). In March (13 days, 2 mm) and April, when average temperatures hover around freezing, both snowfall and mixed precipitation, including sleet or freezing rain, are possible.
The summer period and early autumn, from May to September, bring mostly rain to Banff. June stands out as the month with the highest frequency of precipitation, averaging 20 rainy days and the highest, though still modest, volume of 4 mm. In May (about 15 rainy days), July (about 16 days), August (about 14 days), and September (about 12 days), rain is also frequent, but the total amount usually does not exceed 2 mm per month. This indicates that summer and early autumn precipitation in Banff is typically light and short-lived, though it is a fairly regular occurrence.

Packing Tips
When packing for Banff, it's important to account for significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year and even within a single day. Layering should be your key wardrobe principle. This will allow you to easily adapt to changing conditions by adding or removing layers. Regardless of the season, be sure to bring comfortable, sturdy walking shoes, as Banff and its surroundings are perfect for long walks and outdoor activities. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also essential year-round, especially in winter due to the sun reflecting off the snow and at high altitudes.
For the winter months (December to February, as well as November and March), when average temperatures drop significantly below freezing (down to -14°C and below), you will need very warm clothing: thermal underwear, fleece sweaters, an insulated and windproof jacket, warm pants (perhaps ski pants), a hat, a scarf, and gloves or mittens. In spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), the weather can be unpredictable: from sunny days to frosts and rain or even snow. Layering is especially relevant during these periods: a light jacket, a sweater, waterproof outerwear, and a hat will come in handy.
Summer months (June-August) in Banff bring warmer weather with average temperatures around +12°C and daily highs up to +18°C. However, evenings and nights can be chilly, so a light jacket or a warm sweater will still be needed. June has the highest number of rainy days (about 20 days), so a lightweight waterproof jacket or an umbrella will be very useful. T-shirts, light trousers, or shorts are suitable for summer walks, but always keep an extra layer with you in case of a cold spell or rain.
