General Weather Character

The climate in Jixi can be described as sharply continental with clear signs of monsoon influence. The city is characterised by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year: here you will encounter both a severe frosty winter and a warm, fairly humid summer. The seasons change very distinctly, so the timing of your trip significantly affects the nature of your journey.

Winter months, especially January, are distinguished by low temperatures that can drop to -21°C, while the weather remains predominantly dry and clear. Summer brings long-awaited warmth: in July, the air warms up on average to +22°C, and sometimes above +26°C. However, tourists should be prepared for the fact that the summer period sees the peak of precipitation — the number of rainy days in June and August increases noticeably compared to the arid winter.

Temperature

The climate in Jixi is distinguished by pronounced seasonality and significant temperature contrasts throughout the year. Winter here is severe, frosty, and prolonged. The coldest months are December and January, when the average temperature drops to -15°C...-16.2°C. At night, the air often cools down to extreme values below -21°C, so for travellers planning a trip at this time, high-quality warm clothing and protection from the cold are vitally necessary.

Summer, conversely, brings pleasant warmth, making this season the most comfortable for tourism. The hottest month traditionally becomes July with an average figure of about +22.5°C and daytime highs reaching +26.8°C. Unlike many other regions of China, exhausting heat is rare here; summer weather is characterised by moderate warmth, creating excellent conditions for walks and exploring the city.

Spring and autumn in the region pass quite quickly, demonstrating noticeable temperature fluctuations. In transitional periods, such as May and September, a substantial difference is observed between daytime warmth and night-time coolness. For example, with daytime warming up to +19°C...+20°C, night temperatures can fall to +8°C...+10°C. Such a drop requires tourists to be ready to change their wardrobe during the day and use the principle of layering in clothing.

Precipitation

The climate in Jixi is characterised by a pronounced contrast between a dry winter and a more humid summer. Winter months, especially December, January, and February, are the driest of the year. According to statistics, rainfall levels at this time are around 0 mm, and the number of days with precipitation is minimal — just 1–2 days per month. Given the low temperatures reaching -20°C, any minor precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rare snow.

With the arrival of warmth, the picture changes, and summer becomes the main rainy season. The wettest period can be called the summer months: in June, the highest number of rainy days is recorded — about 18, and in August, the maximum volume of precipitation falls (up to 5 mm). Despite the fact that it rains often in summer (more than half the month), the total volume remains small, which may indicate the short-term or drizzling nature of the precipitation.

Spring and autumn act as transitional seasons. Already in May, the number of rainy days rises sharply to 13, heralding a humid summer, and by October their number decreases again to 6. Travellers planning a visit to China and this region in the period from June to August are recommended to have an umbrella with them, as the probability of precipitation at this time is highest.

What to Bring

Winter in Jixi is distinguished by severe frosts, so if your trip is planned for the period from November to March, be sure to take high-quality warm clothing with you. Temperatures in the coldest months can drop below -20°C, so you will need a thick windproof down jacket, thermal underwear, woollen sweaters, a warm hat, a scarf, and mittens. Pay special attention to footwear: it should be insulated, have thick soles, and be non-slip so you can move around the city comfortably.

Summer here is moderately warm but is distinguished by increased humidity and frequent rainfall, especially in June, July, and August. For this season, light breathable items such as T-shirts and cotton trousers are suitable, however, evenings can be cool, so a light cardigan or windbreaker will not be amiss. Given the large number of rainy days in summer, be sure to pack a compact umbrella or a high-quality raincoat in your suitcase, as well as a spare pair of shoes.

In the off-season, spring and autumn, the weather in Jixi is changeable, so the best solution will be the principle of layering in your wardrobe. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature drops during the day, taking off or putting on items as necessary. Regardless of the time of year, choose the most comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing, and do not forget sunscreen, which will come in handy even on clear winter days.
