Poetic Cocktail Bar Žlutá Ponorka

About

In the very heart of České Budějovice lies a unique spot — the Poetic Cocktail Bar Žlutá Ponorka (Yellow Submarine). This is not just a drinking establishment, but a conceptual space located in a historic building from the first half of the 19th century that once served as a salt warehouse. Inside, guests are greeted by massive wooden beams, Baroque vaults, and an authentic Gothic core, carefully preserved during restoration.

The bar's defining feature is its "literary" character. The interior is filled with books that are everywhere: on shelves, used as lamp stands, and even featured as art objects on the walls. The design is complemented by quotes from "Alice in Wonderland" and pages from the novella "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," while witty phrases inviting reflection are engraved on the tables.

This is a popular spot on the map of the Czech Republic, attracting both locals and tourists with its genius loci atmosphere. The space is divided into a main hall with an impressive 13-meter bar counter and intimate "poetic" lounges, perfect for private conversations accompanied by masterfully mixed drinks.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this place is the high art of mixology. The bar menu offers an impressive selection: from 15 signature cocktails created by local masters to 30 classic options. Literature connoisseurs should try the legendary Death in the Afternoon, prepared according to Ernest Hemingway's own recipe. The bartenders' work here turns into a real show, which is a pleasure to watch while sitting at the long wooden bar.

In addition to tasting the drinks, be sure to look into the poetic lounges. These are ideal zones for those who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle surrounded by books and philosophical quotes. Don't forget to pay attention to the details: you can leave your own note on the tables or find an inspiring saying left by someone before you. To complete your evening, try the multicultural cuisine, offering refined snacks that pair perfectly with both strong and refreshing mixes.

Getting There

The bar is located at Česká 141, 66, in the very heart of the historic center. If you are already walking around the main square (Přemysla Otakara II náměstí), the walk to the venue will take no more than 5–10 minutes at a leisurely pace.

For those arriving in the city by train, the walk from the České Budějovice railway station takes about 15–20 minutes. You can also use public transport: trams #1, 2, 3, and 4 will quickly take you to the central blocks. If you prefer comfort, a taxi from the station or any point in the center will get you there in just a few minutes.

When planning a trip by car, keep in mind that parking in the old town is limited. It is recommended to leave your car in one of the public garages nearby and continue to the bar on foot, enjoying the city's evening atmosphere.

History & Facts

The story of this place began in 2000, when the first version of the bar opened in the cozy basements of a residential building on Chelčického Street. For 15 years, the establishment earned the public's love until the owner, Mirek Regore, decided to move the project to a more iconic and spacious building in the city center.

In 2015, the bar found a new home in a Classicist building dating back to 1833–1835. This site has a rich past: it once housed a salt warehouse and the salt administration. During the reconstruction, architects and restorers preserved the building's Gothic core and Baroque vaults, creating a unique "genius loci" that blends antiquity with modern comfort.

With the move, the concept also evolved: the bar officially became "poetic." Today, Žlutá Ponorka is more than just a place for a drink; it is a space with an intellectual subtext. Moving away from noisy promotions like "happy hours" in favor of premium drink quality and a calm atmosphere marked a new chapter in the development of this legendary Czech establishment.

Time Needed

To fully experience the aesthetics of the venue and try a couple of signature cocktails, we recommend setting aside 2–3 hours for your visit. This is enough time to explore the book installations, read the quotes on the tables, and enjoy the bartenders' craftsmanship without rushing.

If you plan not only to taste the drinks but also to explore the bar's multicultural cuisine, you should count on 4 hours. An evening at the "Yellow Submarine" flies by thanks to the enveloping atmosphere and friendly service.
