Current Weather

Planning a trip to Helwan? Here you will find the most up-to-date information on current weather conditions and detailed forecasts to help make your journey to Egypt as comfortable and predictable as possible.

Overview

The climate of Helwan is of a dry desert type, typical for the southern outskirts of Cairo. This region of Egypt is famous for its abundance of sunny days—more than 300 per year. Due to the extremely low humidity, the city has long been considered an excellent climatic health resort, where the proximity of the Great Nile slightly softens the heat while preserving the healing dryness of the atmosphere.

The weather in this area is characterized by clearly defined seasonality. Long, hot summers are followed by remarkably mild winters, where frosts are virtually non-existent. A significant feature is the substantial diurnal temperature fluctuation: even after the scorching daytime sun, evenings can bring a pleasant, and sometimes bracing, coolness.

The general climate profile highlights its stability. The absence of sharp weather changes and minimal precipitation create favorable conditions for wellness and year-round tourism, although the transition seasons and winter are considered the optimal times to visit.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Helwan exhibits a classic desert character. Traditionally, the hottest months are July and August, when daytime highs regularly exceed +37°C and can reach +45°C on some days. Nights during this period offer only relative relief, with temperatures around +23°C.

The winter period, spanning December and January, is considered the most comfortable time to visit. During these months, the average daytime temperature stays around +19–21°C, which is ideal for long walks. However, it is worth noting that at night, the thermometer can drop to +8–9°C, creating a sharp contrast with the daytime warmth.

Transition seasons in this part of Egypt pass quickly. As early as April, the air warms up to +29°C, and in October, a pleasant warmth of around +30°C remains. This predictability of temperatures makes Helwan an excellent destination for those who do not tolerate high humidity and frequent changes in atmospheric pressure well.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Helwan is an extremely rare occurrence. The annual average is only about 40 mm, making this one of the driest regions in the world. Most of the moisture falls during the winter period, from December to February, usually in the form of short-lived showers that dry up instantly under the Egyptian sun.

The summer months, from May through September, are characterized by absolute dryness: the probability of rain during this time is practically zero. Low air humidity helps travelers handle high temperatures more easily, as the heat in Egypt does not feel as exhausting as in the humid tropics.

While snow and fog are atypical for this area, one should remember the possibility of sandstorms in spring (March to May) brought by the Khamsin wind. For the rest of the year, the sky over Helwan remains flawlessly clear, providing excellent visibility for sightseeing.

Packing Tips

For a trip to Helwan during the summer (May to October), the core of your wardrobe should be clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Light colors will help reflect the sun's rays better. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with an SPF 50+ rating. Avoid synthetics to allow your skin to "breathe" in the dry heat.

If your visit to Egypt is planned for the winter months, be sure to use the layering principle. You will be comfortable in a light shirt during the day, but for evenings and early mornings, you will need jeans and a thick windbreaker or sweater, as the temperature drops significantly after sunset. Comfortable closed-toe shoes will be indispensable for excursions across sandy areas and exploring historical ruins.

Among the useful accessories, we recommend always carrying a water bottle and a light scarf, which will protect you not only from the sun but also from dust if the wind picks up. It is also a good idea to bring moisturizing cream for your face and hands, as the dry desert air can quickly lead to skin dryness.
